21 dead in Indonesia tunnel collapse

The death toll from a tunnel collapse last week at an underground mine training facility in Indonesia has risen to 21 after emergency workers recovered more bodies from the rubble, the mining company said Tuesday.

A further seven people remain unaccounted for, according to PT Freeport Indonesia, which mines gold, copper and silver in the region.

Rescuers had managed to save 10 people from the accident, which occurred on May 14 about 500 meters from the entrance of the Big Gossan Mine. The facility is in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua.

The Indonesian government said a tunnel roof collapsed after a landslide.

H7N9 found in poultry sample in S China

A poultry sample in south China has tested positive for H7N9 virus, the country's agriculture authority said on Monday.

The avian flu virus, which has so far led to the deaths of 36 people nationwide, was detected in a sample of chicken that came from a market in the city of Zengcheng in Guangdong Province.

After completing gene sequence analysis, the national avian flu reference laboratory concluded that the strain of H7N9 found in the sample was highly cogeneric with that found in a pigeon sample tested on April 4.

The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Jiangsu, affecting pig populations.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Monday, 20 May 2013, stating that out of 405 susceptible pigs, three cases were reported. All 405 animals were destroyed. No deaths as a result of the outbreak were recorded.

Tests such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and virus isolation were conducted at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, the OIE's reference laboratory. All tests indicated and confirmed the presence of the FMD virus, Serotype O, in the region.

Bird Flu Spain: LPAI in Cataluna Affects Breeding Hens

Swine virus confirmed in Iowa, Indiana hog herds

Farms in two of the nation's leading pork producing states have tested positive for the potentially fatal porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), U.S. pork industry veterinarian official said Monday.

Three farms in Iowa and one Indiana operation have confirmed cases of the virus, said Dr Lisa Becton, director of swine health information and research for the National Pork Board. The cases in Iowa were located on farms "all across the state, not in one specific area," Becton said.

PEDV does not pose a food safety or health risk to humans and the pork is safe eat. Other animals cannot contract the swine-only virus.

Salmonella from cheese hits 25 in Minnesota

Homemade unpasteurized fresh cheese has sickened at least two dozen people in Minnesota. The outbreak may be over, but state officials say the cases demonstrate the dangers of eating raw dairy products.

At least 25 Minnesotans have been sickened with salmonellosis linked to eating a state health officials said.

The Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the city of Minneapolis have been investigating the outbreak and the source of the raw milk used to make the raw Mexican-style cheese, queso fresco, since the first cases were detected in late April.

Reactor at Calvert Cliffs shuts down again

One of two reactors at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in southern Maryland was shut down again Tuesday, the second unplanned outage in the past two weeks.

Plant operators powered down Unit 2 manually around 5:30 a.m. after a pump that feeds water to a steam generator shut down because of high vibrations, according to Neil Sheehan, spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The cause of the pump's vibrations appears to be a failed mechanical coupling between the pump's motor and the pump, he said.

Sheehan and Kory Raftery, spokesman for Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, said the manual shutdown went smoothly and posed no safety risks for plant workers or the public. Raftery said the reactor was in "stable condition.",0,1431577.story

Avian Cholera kills Thunder Bay turkeys - Canada

The mystery behind the deaths of some turkeys in the Mountain Road area seems to have been solved with the help of a wildlife pathologist.

After a handful of turkeys suddenly died, some neighbours in the area were concerned the birds were poisoned.

But a Guelph pathologist with the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre who looked at the dead birds said the turkeys had bacteria called Avian Cholera.

"We have very rarely seen infections with this bacterium in wild birds here in Ontario,” Doug Campbell said.

“You know, I've probably seen a handful of cases."

Deadly meningitis hits gay men in NYC, mass vaccinations recommended

A particularly deadly meningitis outbreak among gay men in New York City has led the city to recommend that every gay man who is basically sexually active, and not in an exclusive relationship, to get a meningitis vaccination pronto.

Per the CDC, “Meningitis is a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord known as the meninges.”

The alert was issued two weeks ago – I didn’t hear a word about it until yesterday when Michael Broder at the Huffington Post wrote about it.

The New York City Health Department’s recommendation for who should get vaccinated is written a bit oddly, but here goes:

The Health Department issued new recommendations today for vaccinating against invasive meningococcal disease – commonly known as meningitis – after an increase in cases. Vaccinations are now advised for men, regardless of HIV status, who regularly have intimate contact with other men met through a website, digital application (“App”), or at a bar or party.

Turrialba Volcano spits massive ash and gas trail - Costa Rica

At 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Turrialba Volcano, located east of the province of Cartago, began to spew gas and ash from two crater openings, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported.

By 8:30 a.m. a significant amount of volcanic material was released from the two openings of volcano, "which may indicate that these materials come from deep areas,” Ovsicori said.

"It is uncertain what will happen. Volcanologists are heading to the site to evaluate the activity," the statement said.

Experts said Tuesday's activity is “normal for an active volcano such as Turrialba,” but they recommended all nearby communities remain vigilant in coming hours.

Low Population Immunity to New Bird Flu Virus H7N9 in Humans

The level of immunity to the recently circulating H7N9 influenza virus in an urban and rural population in Vietnam is very low, according to the first population level study to examine human immunity to the virus, which was previously only found in birds. The findings have implications for planning the public health response to this pandemic threat.

The study used a new, high throughput method that allows blood samples to be analysed for antibodies to multiple human and animal influenza viruses at the same time and is easier to standardise than previous techniques. However, the assay is yet to be validated clinically for the H7N9 virus, and the researchers caution that the results must be interpreted with care.

Since the first case of H7N9 infection in humans was reported in February 2013, there have been 131 confirmed cases and 36 deaths, all in China apart from one case in Taiwan.

Hundreds of dead bull redfish found floating on Mobile Bay for second consecutive spring

For the second year running, a spring die-off of hundreds of spawning-age red drum has occurred in Mobile Bay.

Alabama Marine Resources Department personnel, who surveyed the situation on the water Thursday, estimate finding nearly 400 floating in the bay with about 100 dead hardhead catfish mixed in.

Red drum are commonly called redfish, with the larger specimens known as bull redfish because of their hard-charging fighting ability when hooked by fishermen.

Canada: Freak snowstorm hits Gander, N.F on Victoria Day weekend

While Ontarians were lounging on beaches and barbecuing on the Victoria Day weekend, Newfoundlanders were digging out after a freak snowstorm buried parts of the province under about two feet of snow.

According to, Gander tallied a heavy, wet snowfall of 69 cm between Saturday morning and Sunday night.

"Of this amount, 46 cm fell within only 12 hours on Sunday," the site said. "The snow depth reached at least 55 cm on Sunday and still stood at 51 cm on Monday morning."

Normal snowfall for the province for the month of May is 13 cm, according to Environment Canada. The highest snowfall for all of May was 49 cm, set in 1972.

2 raccoons with rabies found in Hanover, New Hampshire

A warning to pet owners in the Upper Valley -- be on the lookout for rabid animals.

Police in Hanover New Hampshire were recently notified about two raccoons that came into contact with family pets. The raccoons were euthanized and sent to the state lab. In both cases the animals tested positive for rabies.

"They should be careful. They should make sure their animals are vaccinated against rabies. They should keep them restrained if they can. If they are going to let the dog outside, either keep a close eye on it in the yard or keep it on a leash of some sort so it can't wander off," said Hanover Police Lt. Michael Evans.

Jodi Arias: Boyfriend Killer Pleads For Life

The woman guilty of killing her ex-boyfriend has told the jury in charge of her fate why she should be spared the death penalty.

It was unknown whether Jodi Arias, who at one point this month said in an interview she would prefer to be executed than to spend a long life in prison, would actually ask for a death sentence for the killing of former lover Travis Alexander.

But she reversed course on Tuesday, telling jurors she had "lacked perspective" when she made those statements, and pleaded that her family be spared the pain of an execution.

£74m wasted on flu drugs destroyed because of poor record keeping

Taxpayers lost £74m when 6.5m doses of an anti-flu drug were written off as being past their shelf life because of poor record-keeping by the health service, the government's auditors have found.

A total of £424m was spent in stockpiling 40m units of Tamiflu between 2006-07 and 2012-13, despite question marks over the effectiveness of the drug, a National Audit Office memo says. Viruses are reported to have developed resistance to the drug in some cases.

Margaret Hodge MP, chair of the public accounts committee, said she was shocked by the amount of money spent on the drug, and by the failure to keep proper records of when and where it had been bought, particularly in the light of disagreement among experts over its ability to reduce complications. "There is simply no excuse for this waste," she said. "It is important that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) assure themselves that they have all clinical trials information. It is essential, not only for the public purse but for public safety, that the Department of Health carefully examine how it stockpiles medicines in the future."

Israel warns Syria of 'consequences' if Golan fire continues

The head of Israel's armed forces warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday of "consequences" if fire continues from Syrian territory against Israeli troops in the occupied Golan Heights.

"If he disturbs the Golan Heights, he will have to bear the consequences," Lieutenant General Benny Gantz said in an address at Haifa University and broadcast on Israeli television.

"We cannot and shall not allow the Golan Heights to become a comfort zone for Assad," he said.

He spoke hours after Israeli troops and Syrian forces exchanged fire across the sensitive ceasefire line on the Golan Heights, but the Jewish state denied Syrian claims one of its vehicles had been destroyed.

Oklahoma tornado: The storm was a monster - even for Tornado Alley

The people of Moore know a twister when they see one. On 3 May 1999, an EF-5 storm tore through the Oklahoma suburb, killing 36 people and injuring 583. So when a dark, spinning cloud appeared in the skies to the southwest on Monday afternoon, they were prepared - or so they thought. The tornado touched down at 2.46pm.

Lando Hite, an exercise rider and caretaker at the Celestial Acres horse training facility, had been readying to weather a regular storm when he realised what was coming. His experience of living in Oklahoma's “Tornado Alley”, he said, had likely saved his life: when the wind seemed to die down suddenly, he knew danger was imminent, and took refuge in a stable.

“I jumped into one of the [horse] stalls and they collapsed on top of me,” Hite, still shirtless and caked in mud, told local news station KFOR later. “It was unbearably loud. You could see stuff flying everywhere, just like in the movie Twister.”

Britain asks EU to put Hezbollah armed wing on terror list

Britain said on Tuesday it had asked the European Union to put Hezbollah's military arm on its list of terrorist organizations, urging Europe to respond robustly to evidence of the Islamist group's involvement in an attack that killed five Israelis.

Britain's request came after Bulgaria accused the Lebanese militant movement in February of carrying out a bomb attack on a bus in the Black Sea city of Burgas that killed the Israelis and their Bulgarian driver in July last year.

Britain also cited a four-year jail sentence handed down by a Cypriot court in March to a Hezbollah member accused of plotting to attack Israeli interests on the island.

Woman Finds Dog Lost During Oklahoma Tornado While Being Interviewed

A woman who thought she had lost it all found one of the things most precious to her while being interviewed on live television – her pet dog, buried alive under the rubble of her former home.

Tornado survivor Barbara Garcia was relating her harrowing tale of survival to CBS News, recalling in a deliberate voice the details of feeling her house coming down around her as the storm wreaked havoc on the area.

“I was sitting on the stool, holding my dog … this was the game plan all through the years … to go in that little bathroom,” she said, recalling to CBS News reporter Anna Werner her experience. “… I felt the stool come up out of the floor and I rolled around a little bit.”

As she surveyed the piles of broken wood and appliances around her, Garcia said that after it was over, she called for her dog, but got no reply.

She added, “I know he’s in there somewhere.”

IRS went after 83-year-old Tea Party granny who survived Japanese internment camp during WW2

Internal Revenue Service officials not only wanted a wide variety of information from the Albuquerque Tea Party's application for non-profit status, it also wanted to know what contacts it had with people from other political organizations too.

That included an 83-year-old great-grandmother who was once held in a World War II internment camp, New Mexico Watchdog has discovered.

"I've always paid my taxes and everything," Marianne Chiffelle told New Mexico Watchdog. "What I do think is, it doesn't surprise me...because of this government we have at the moment."

EU mission seeks to rebuild Mali army after U.S. faltered

Under a blazing sun and the critical gaze of British and Irish instructors, a line of 11 Malian soldiers lie prone in the dust firing AK-47 rounds at targets, one-by-one.

"One out of 10 - not very good," Captain Ibrahim Soumassa, commander of the Malian unit, tells one of the men. "We're at 25 meters. When we're at 100, it'll be difficult."

A European Union training mission faces a considerable challenge as it seeks to succeed where years of U.S. instruction failed by turning Mali's rag-tag army into a force capable of facing an Islamist threat stretching across the Sahara.

Court rules bin Laden death photos can stay secret

A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that the U.S. government had properly classified top secret more than 50 images of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden taken after his death, and that the government did not need to release them.

The unanimous ruling by three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected a request for the images by a conservative nonprofit watchdog group.

Judicial Watch sued for photographs and video from the May 2011 raid in which U.S. special forces killed bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, after more than a decade of searching.

EU wants to exclude utilities from U.S. trade talks

The European Union wants to exclude much of the utility sector from a prospective EU-U.S. free trade agreement in order to protect government controlled infrastructure, the latest draft of the EU's mandate for the negotiations showed on Tuesday.

Unlike in the United States, many national European electricity grids and power generators are state controlled, and governments fear that a deal supporting the free flow of U.S. companies and money into the sector would erode their influence over assets seen as vital to national infrastructure.

"The high quality of the EU's public utilities should be preserved," said the draft, seen by Reuters, which sought in particular to exclude "services supplied in exercise of government authorities."

Syria, Israel exchange fire on Golan Heights

Syria said its troops destroyed an Israeli vehicle that crossed into its territory from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday and warned that any attempt to violate its sovereignty would meet "immediate and firm retaliation".

Israel said the incident took place on its side of the Golan ceasefire line, that the vehicle was damaged but not destroyed, none of its soldiers were hurt and they returned fire.

The clash highlighted the potential for renewed conflict along a frontline that has become increasingly fraught after nearly four decades of calm overseen by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his father.

Dominique Venner Suicide: Notre Dame Evacuated After Man Kills Himself

Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral has been evacuated after a far-right historian shot himself dead in front of the main altar, according to a police source.

The man was reported to be Dominique Venner, 78, who is known in France for his far-right political essays.

He reportedly had a letter on him but said nothing before he shot himself. The motives for the suicide and the contents of the letter were not yet clear.

However, a note posted on his blog dated May 21 criticised a law passed by the Socialist government last week allowing same-sex marriages.

Oklahoma Tornado: Obama's Pledge To Survivors....To be Continued in 6 Months

President Barack Obama says Americans will support victims of the Oklahoma tornado by "opening our homes and hearts to those in need".

At least 24 people are known to have died in the disaster, including nine children, some of whom were killed as they sheltered in a school.

President Obama told emergency services they would have "all the resources they need at their disposal".

Pistorius' Brother Cleared Over Woman's Death

Carl Pistorius, the brother of murder-accused Olympian Oscar Pistorius, has been acquitted of a charge of culpable homicide.

The charge referred to the death of a woman in a car accident in 2008.

A magistrate ruled that Carl Pistorius was not negligent and that the woman - Maria Barnard - was driving her motorcycle too fast when she crashed into the back of his vehicle.

A court spokesperson said the state had failed to prove a watertight case against him.

Scenes of devastation from the Moore, Oklahoma tornado

Oklahoma lowers tornado death toll to 24 amid frantic search

Emergency workers searched for survivors in the rubble of homes, schools and a hospital in an Oklahoma town hit by a powerful tornado, but officials on Tuesday sharply lowered the number of deaths caused by the storm.

The Oklahoma state medical examiner's office said 24 bodies had been recovered from the wreckage of Monday's storm, down from the 51 they had reported earlier. The earlier number likely reflected some double-counted deaths, said Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer for the medical examiner.

The 2-mile (3-km) wide tornado tore through Moore outside Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, trapping victims beneath the rubble. One elementary school took a direct hit and another was destroyed.

Rubber bullets fired at South African mine strikers, several hurt

Ten striking South African miners were taken to hospital on Tuesday after being hit by rubber bullets, police said, as labor strife swells in mines and factories ahead of mid-year pay negotiations.

Auto maker Mercedes-Benz said a two-day wildcat stoppage at its East London plant had ended but the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) squashed any relief with an immediate demand for a 20 percent pay rise.

"If our demands are not met we will have no option but to go to the streets," NUMSA national treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo told Reuters.

Malaysia voices concern over North Korea's missile launch

Malaysia has voiced concern over the latest short-range missile launches by North Korea from May 18 to 19, resulting in heightened tensions in the Korea Peninsula.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said Malaysia joined the international community in calling on North Korea to fully respect the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, including the UNSC Presidential Statement of April 16, 2012.

"Malaysia continues to call on all parties concerned to create a conducive atmosphere for dialogues and consultations at bilateral and multilateral levels in the interest of peace, security and stability in the peninsula and the region," he said in a statement here.

In this regard, he said Malaysia strongly supported the call by South Korea to start the dialogue process with North Korea.

China media: North Korea warned

State media in China warn North Korea to stop detaining fishing boats amid public anger over the "kidnapping" of fishermen by unidentified captors.

State media report a Chinese fishing boat and its 16-man crew who were reportedly held for ransom by an armed group in waters off the west coast of North Korea were released early on Tuesday.

Global Times says the incident has "fuelled outrage" among the Chinese public, with internet users venting "fury" towards North Korea, as "traditionally close ties between the nations have been pushed toward greater tension".

5th Grader Threatens to Kill Classmates, Sell Her Soul to the Devil

A 5th grader in Sacramento, Calif., allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened other classmates this week.

Students in the combined 5th and 6th grade classroom at John Sloat Elementary School said the girl told them she wanted to sell her soul to the devil.

Some parents were upset that school officials did not notify them of the incident until after school. “To not be notified all day until 6:30 at night last that was real upsetting,” said Antonio Farinias. “Because when I picked up my kids from school they were in tears.”

The girl was sent to the office Thursday for allegedly threatening classmates in a classroom and in a bathroom

President Barack Obama urged the president of Myanmar on Monday to halt violence against a Muslim minority but praised economic and political reforms in the formerly pariah nation that is emerging as a U.S. ally in China's backyard.

During the first visit to the White House in 47 years by a leader of the Southeast Asian nation, Obama called for an end to the killings of Rohingya Muslims in western Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Reformist Myanmar President Thein Sein vowed to resolve ethnic conflicts and bring perpetrators to justice.

Israel fires back at Syria after gunshots at its troops

Israeli troops shot at a target across the Syrian frontier on Tuesday in response to gunfire that struck its forces in the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said.

A statement said a military vehicle was damaged by shots fired from Syria but that there were no injuries. It said that soldiers "returned precise fire".

Gunfire incidents across the frontier from Syria have recurred in past months during an escalating a civil war there in which rebels have sought to topple President Bashar al-Assad. Israel's Army Radio said Tuesday's was the third consecutive cross-border shooting this week.

The Israeli military added in its statement that it viewed these incidents "with concern".

Russia says two rebels killed in North Caucasus

Russian security forces killed two suspected militants in the North Caucasus during a night-time sweep in the region plagued by an Islamist insurgency, investigators said on Tuesday.

A spokesman for local investigators said the men were killed in a gunbattle with officers after refusing to surrender during a raid on a house in a suburb of the capital of Ingushetia, a region to the west of Chechnya.

The wife and child of one of them left the house before the firefight, he told Reuters by telephone.
