People trapped after explosion at fertiliser plant in Waco, Texas

SEVERAL people are reportedly trapped inside a nursing home in Waco, Texas after an explosion at a nearby fertiliser plant.

Five people have been critically injured in the blast and at least ten buildings are on fire after the major explosion at West Fertilizer about 10.50am AEST.

The nearby Rest Haven nursing home is reportedly on fire, with several residents believed to be trapped.

Several homes withing a two-block area of the plane are also on fire.

Photos collated on the 4chan website show numerous images of suspicious individuals wearing large backpacks present at the scene of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Three of the men appear to be Arab or Middle Eastern in appearance, whereas another two of the individuals are white.

The images show the men looking away from the marathon runners, talking on cellphones and running from the scene immediately after the blast.

Remains of one of the backpacks are also photographed yards from where one of the bombs exploded. The FBI states that at least one of the pressure cooker devices used in the bombing was housed in a backpack.

U.S. military to step up presence, send troops, to Jordan in light of Syria civil war

In a critical indication of growing U.S. military involvement in the civil war in Syria, CNN has learned Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is ordering the deployment of up to 200 troops to Jordan, according to two Defense Department officials.

The troops, which will come from the headquarters of the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas, "creates an additional capability" beyond what has been there, one official said.

The group will give the United States the ability to "potentially form a joint task force for military operations, if ordered," he said.

The new deployment will include communications and intelligence specialists who will assist the Jordanians and "be ready for military action" if President Barack Obama were to order it, the official said.

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

This has been most obvious in the context of recent mass shootings. In those awful episodes, a religious or ethnic minority group lacking such privilege would likely be collectively slandered and/or targeted with surveillance or profiling (or worse) if some of its individuals comprised most of the mass shooters. However, white male privilege means white men are not collectively denigrated/targeted for those shootings — even though most come at the hands of white dudes.

Likewise, in the context of terrorist attacks, such privilege means white non-Islamic terrorists are typically portrayed not as representative of whole groups or ideologies, but as “lone wolf” threats to be dealt with as isolated law enforcement matters. Meanwhile, non-white or developing-world terrorism suspects are often reflexively portrayed as representative of larger conspiracies, ideologies and religions that must be dealt with as systemic threats — the kind potentially requiring everything from law enforcement action to military operations to civil liberties legislation to foreign policy shifts.

Peers on the European Union Select Committee found fraud against the taxpayer could be up to 12 times worse than Brussels officials will admit.

The committee said it believes frauds ranging from cigarette smuggling to bribery and corruption "never see the light of day" because the EU has failed to grasp the scale of the problem. This is because some member states are reluctant to report suspected cases and others fall through the gaps of a "tangled web" of EU investigation agencies.

Scientist jailed for faking medicine test results

Steven Eaton, 47, a researcher for US pharmaceutical firm Aptuit, was discovered to be manipulating important safety tests on several potentially new drugs.

The scientist, who worked at the company’s drug discovery and development site in Riccarton, near Edinburgh, was sentenced to three months in prison after becoming the first person to be prosecuted under laws introduced 14 years ago.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that Eaton’s actions could have had serious implications for the health of cancer patients if they had been given a drug based on his data.

A SUSPECT has been arrested in the Boston Marathon bombings, CNN has reported, citing two sources.

The arrest, less than 48 hours after the attack, was made on the basis of two videos, CNN reports. A full federal briefing is scheduled for 7 AEST.

Earlier, authorities said they may have an image of a suspect carrying, and maybe even dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene, the Boston Globe has tweeted.

Secret Service: Suspicious letter mailed to Obama containing "suspicious substance" (A work assignment, perhaps?)

The U.S. Secret Service has intercepted a letter addressed to President Barack Obama that contained a "suspicious substance."

A law enforcement official said the letter is very similar to one recently mailed to Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker. That letter tested positive Tuesday for poisonous ricin.

The official requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

'Daily News' doctored front page photo from Boston Bombing (Oops)

The New York Post was derided Tuesday for apparent inaccuracies in its reporting on the bombing at the Boston Marathon. And now, its rival tabloid, the Daily News, is facing criticism over an apparent photo touch-up.

On yesterday's cover wrap, the News ran a photo taken by John Tlumacki of The Boston Globe showing an injured woman lying in a pool of blood while being tended to by a civilian.

It was one of many widely circulated images capturing the moments after explosives were detonated near the finish line of the marathon on Monday afternoon, killing at least three and wounding more than 170 in a likely terrorist attack about which police are still scrambling to scare up leads.

Germany: Free Sandwich Gift May Have Contained Rat Poison

Twenty employees of a company in Germany have been hospitalised in case sandwiches they were given as a gift turn out to have been poisoned.

The suspicious sandwiches were left on the doorstep of a company near the northwestern town of Vechta on Tuesday with a note saying they were a present.

Police say 25 employees of the company in Steinfeld, Lower Saxony, ate the sandwiches before someone noticed a strange substance on them.

The emergency services were called and a fleet of ambulances took those who had eaten the sandwiches for urgent treatment.

The company and the identity of those who ate them has not been revealed.

Local reports in Germany say the substance is suspected to be rat poison.

Demonstrators pretending to be mourners are planning to blow whistles and sound horns to disrupt Baroness Thatcher's funeral cortege this morning.

The news comes as more than 4,000 officers line the streets in an attempt to guard against violent demonstrations.

The plan has been arranged through a Facebook group, 'Maggie's Good Riddance Party', which attracted more than 3,000 members.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson told Sky News: 'We've got a democracy here and people are perfectly entitled to disagree and to make their points and indeed to protest. But I would point out that this is the funeral of an 87-year-old woman whose family are in mourning, so I really hope that people would show restraint.'

21 executed in Iraq for 'terrorism'

Iraqi authorities hanged 21 men after they were convicted of terrorism, the nation's Ministry of Justice reported Tuesday.

The ministry said those executed were involved in kidnappings, assassinations, bombings, and the killings of security officials and civilians. Some of them had carried out attacks by planting bombs and rigging cars and motorcycles with explosives.

Amnesty International said the death penalty was suspended after the 2003 invasion but quickly restored by the first Iraqi government.

Two rockets lands in southern Israel

Two rockets landed in the southern Israeli city of Eilat on Wednesday, police said.

"We are telling residents to immediately take cover and make their way to safe zones and shelters if they hear the sirens," Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries after the rockets landed in a neighborhood and an open field.

President Barack Obama has said he doesn't believe North Korea can fit a nuclear warhead on a missile, casting strong doubt on an alarming assessment disclosed last week by the Pentagon's intelligence arm.

And he warned the young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that weeks of threats against the United States and South Korea had only served to isolate the regime further.

Asked in an NBC News interview whether North Korea could put a nuclear weapon on a ballistic missile, Obama said, "Based on our current intelligence assessments, we do not think that they have that capacity."

6.2 Quake jolts islands off east Japan, no tsunami warning: NHK

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 hit islands off the east coast of Japan on Wednesday but no tsunami warning was issued, public broadcaster NHK said.

NHK said the epicenter of the earthquake was near Miyake island, about 180 km (111 miles) south of Tokyo. There were reports of landslides on the island, the broadcaster said.

WHO says no poultry contact in some China bird flu cases....Try Most!

The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that a number of people who have tested positive for a new strain of bird flu in China have had no history of contact with poultry, adding to the mystery about the virus that has killed 16 people to date.

WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl confirmed that "there are people who have no history of contact with poultry", after a top Chinese scientist was quoted as saying that about 40 percent of those with the H7N9 virus had had no contact with fowl.

"This is one of the puzzles still (to) be solved and therefore argues for a wide investigation net," Hartl said in emailed comments, though he added he did not know the exact percentage.

Jobless Total Up As Income Squeeze Tightens

The unemployment total has risen for the second month in a row while average pay increases were found to be at their weakest on record.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the number of people without work rose 70,000 in the three months to the end of February to reach 2.56 million - pushing the jobless rate up to 7.9%.

The number of people in work fell by 2,000 over the period to just under 30 million - the first time the figure has dipped since autumn 2011.

A British man has been arrested by police in Florida who claim he flew to the US to have sex with an underage girl and then raise their children as sex slaves.

Shuhel Mahboob Ali allegedly made contact via the internet with an undercover investigator from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in January.

He is said to have told the agent of his plans.

Home Secretary Theresa May To Appeal Over Qatada Ruling...Again!....Just stick him on a plane already!

The Home Office has asked the Court of Appeal for leave to appeal over a decision to allow Abu Qatada to stay in the UK.

The move to appeal to the Supreme Court comes after judges last month rejected the latest in a long line of attempts to deport the radical cleric to Jordan.

In March, Court of Appeal judges backed an earlier ruling that Qatada, also known as Omar Othman, could not be deported over fears that evidence obtained through torture would be used against him.
