It has been 90 years since the construction of the Huanghuagang memorial, and with the change of times, the Statue of Liberty on top the memorial also underwent several transformations, bearing witness to a turbulent history of hardship and change.

Greenpeace condemns French President's promotion of nuclear interests in India

The French President's promotion of nuclear interests in India, has got the greens worried. Environment NGO, Greenpeace worded out a strong condemnation of the French President Francois Hollande's promotion of India's nuclear ambitions.

A French multi-national having expertise in nuclear energy is to build two European pressurised reactors (EPR) at Jaitapur in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district. Jaitapur has been a hotbed of protests against the nuclear reactors for the last few years now. After the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan, the protests grew more vehement.


A release sent by Greenpeace said that Hollande has come into power after promising to reduce his country's reliance on nuclear energy. "Hollande had come to power with the promise of reducing France's reliance on nuclear energy from current level of 75 per cent to 50 per cent by 2025. However, France has been pushing the Indian government on reactor costs," the release said. Greenpeace called Hollande's stance "hypocritical".

Iran to avenge killing of Guard commander in Syria - official

Iran will soon exact revenge on Israel for the recent killing of a Revolutionary Guards commander in Syria, an aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted on Saturday as saying.

Iran said on Thursday that an Iranian military commander named Hessam Khoshnevis, also called Hassan Shateri in some news accounts, had been killed in Syria by rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Tehran.

Kim Kwang-jin says that when he worked for North Korea's state insurance company in Singapore in 2003, he stuffed $20 million into two suitcases one day and sent it to Pyongyang as a special gift for then leader Kim Jong-il.

He received a medal for that, Kim Kwang-jin said.

North Korea, sanctioned by the United States since the 1950s and later by the United Nations after its nuclear tests, has been shuffling money for decades from illicit drugs, arms and financial scams and is now more expert at hiding it to fund its weapons programs and its leaders' opulent lifestyles.

Tens of thousands rally in Tunis to support Islamists

Tens of thousands of supporters of Tunisia's Islamist-led government marched in the capital on Saturday, one of the biggest in a series of pro-government and opposition rallies sparked by the assassination of a secular politician.

The February 6 killing of Chokri Belaid, a human rights lawyer and opposition leader, has thrown Tunisia into political turmoil two years after it staged the first of the Arab Spring revolts.

Violent protests, in which one policeman was killed, swept Tunisia after the assassination, with crowds attacking offices of the ruling Islamist party Ennahda in Tunis and elsewhere.

Islamists have launched counter-rallies, up to now much smaller.

Bomb kills 47 in Pakistan's Quetta

Pakistan's Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which intelligence officials say has become a major security threat, claimed responsibility for a sectarian attack on Shi'ites which killed 47 people in the city of Quetta on Saturday.

Officials said most of the dead were from Pakistan's Shi'ite minority, which has come under siege from Sunni extremist groups who seem to carry out sectarian attacks at will.

Privacy outrage after it emerges Google is sharing Android users' names, emails and ADDRESSES with app developers

Campaigners today slammed Google for violating Android users' privacy after it emerged that the company was sharing their personal details with mobile app developers.

An Australian software developer revealed that the search giant was sending him the full names, email and post codes of everyone who purchased his app on Google's Play Store.

He said the information was so detailed he would even be able to use it to 'track down and harass users who left negative reviews or refunded the app purchase'.

Revealed: Labour plan for £250 tax rise after next election as party turns its back on cuts

Labour is looking at proposals to hit taxpayers with a £250 tax rise – the equivalent of adding 2p to the basic rate of income tax – if it wins the next election in 2015.

The party’s equalities spokesman Kate Green revealed that it could reject George Osborne’s austerity plan – which is three parts cuts to one part tax increases – in favour of a 50-50 split, which would send taxes soaring.

'Prisoner X' plot thickens: Israel implicates Australia in scandal

Australia had detailed intelligence of a national thought to be a Mossad spy who committed suicide in an Israeli prison. The circumstances of his death have given rise to a myriad of theories, some suggesting his interrogation drove him to suicide.

An Israeli official speaking on condition of anonymity to newspaper The Australian said it was clear the Australian government was “in the know long before ['Prisoner X'] died” in June 2010.

The government source stressed that the Australian authorities were well aware that 34-year-old Ben Zygier was not “some backpacker who got lost trekking when his coffin was returned to Australia.”

Russia starts clean-up after meteor strike

A day after a spectacular meteor blast shook Russia's Urals region, the clean-up operation got under way Saturday in the hard-hit Russian city of Chelyabinsk.

Although some buildings escaped unscathed when the sonic waves from the Friday morning explosion reverberated through the city, others lost some or most of their windows.

About 1,000 people were hurt, many by the flying glass, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.

The injured included more than 200 children. Most of those hurt are in the Chelyabinsk region, though the vast majority of injuries are not thought to be serious.

Thousands of dead fish at Angrignon Park, Canada

It's a disturbing and frightening sight.

Thousands of fish, most of them dead, trapped in a small, shallow part of the lake at Angrignon park.

How they got trapped, or died, remains a mystery, but people walking by are concerned.

Tony Di Lorenzo brought the situation to CJAD's attention. He was out walking his dogs as he does everyday, when he came across all the dead fish in the small body of water.

Bird Flu Reported In German Poultry Farm

Initial tests confirm H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) infection in a duck farm in Brandenburg, eastern Germany, authorities announced today.

Environment Ministry officials say that H5N1 was initially suspected when the poultry farm, which was carrying out its own tests, had positive results for avian influenza.

Nine workers at the Hanford Plutonium Finishing Plant are being checked as a precaution to determine whether they may have breathed in radioactive material.

Last week, radiation release alarms sounded as workers were completing the removal of contaminated material from within a glovebox. No contamination was found on the skin or personal clothing of those workers, who were using respirators.

On Monday, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said one person who had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan was being treated in an intensive care unit at a Manchester hospital after becoming infected with a new type of coronavirus.

On Wednesday, a relative of the patient who had no recent travel history became infected and now the HPA has said a third person, who has also not travelled recently, is infected.

Facebook Targeted In 'Zero-Day' Hack Attack

Facebook has revealed it was the victim of a sophisticated attack by an unknown hacking group last month.

The site's security was breached after a handful of Facebook employees unknowingly visited a website that had been compromised with malicious code.

When a suspicious file was discovered on the company's computers, a forensic investigation was launched and the origin of the file was traced to an employee's laptop.

A further search uncovered other infected computers, but Facebook insists there was no data breach and no passwords or user data were compromised.

A 20,000-strong rescue team has reportedly been sent by the Russian authorities to the Ural Mountains after a meteor struck.

Some 1,100 people were injured after the meteor blazed across the western Siberian sky with a blinding flash and booming shockwave.

The Russian Academy of Sciences said it entered the Earth's atmosphere at 33,000mph (54,000kph) - 15 times the speed of a rifle bullet - and shattered into pieces around 18-32 miles (30-50km) high in the sky.

Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky denies meteorite, claims US testing weapons

Moscow: Russian lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, known for his outrageous remarks, said that meteorite fragments had not rained down on Russia but that the light flashes and tremors resulted from US weapons tests.

"Those aren't meteors falling, it's the Americans testing new weapons," Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, said.

He said US Secretary of State John Kerry had wanted to warn Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the "provocation", but could not reach him.

This was a reference to US State Department comments earlier this week that Kerry had spent several days trying to speak to Lavrov by phone to discuss North Korea and Syria.

Zhirinovsky said outer space has its own laws.

NASA estimates the Chelyabinsk meteor was about the size of a bus, weighed 7,000 tons, was the largest meteor to hit Earth in 100 years and detonated with the power of 20 atomic bombs.

Around 1200 people have sought medical attention in Chelyabinsk alone because of the disaster, the region's governor Mikhail Yurevich told RIA Novosti. Over 110 of them have been hospitalized and two of them are in critical condition. Among the injured there are 159 children, the Russian Emergency ministry reported. A 52-year-old woman who suffered spinal fracture will be transported to Moscow for treatment, according to RussiaToday.
