The city is working with health care centers to offer free flu vaccines and hopes to set up places where people can get vaccinated. The city said there have been four flu-related deaths, all elderly residents, since the unofficial start of the flu season Oct. 1.
"The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to get the flu shot," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The city was experiencing its worst flu season since at least 2009, Menino said, with about 700 confirmed cases of the flu, compared with 70 all of last season.

MoD Overspends Equipment Budget By £6.5bn
The Ministry of Defence has overspent its equipment budget by £6.5bn and some of its major orders are likely to be delivered 39 years late.
The National Audit Office (NAO), in its latest report into the MoD's spending, has revealed that the 16 most costly projects, which originally totalled £56.5bn when they were approved and should have taken 159 years to deliver between them, now have a combined price tag of £61.1bn and will not be ready for a total of 195 years.

Killer Whales Trapped In Canadian Sea Ice
The animals, stuck in the waters near the remote Inuit community of Inukjuak in Quebec, are taking it in turns to gasp for breath through a hole in the ice, which was about the size of a van but is reportedly shrinking due to freezing temperatures.
The whales are said to be panicking at times in their desperate bid to get oxygen.

Astronomers following the so-called doomsday asteroid Apophis, which will be whizzing past Earth on Thursday morning, have found the rock is much larger than had previously been assumed. Since the asteroid could hit Earth in 2036, that’s a problem. The asteroid, named after an Egyptian god of death, had been thought to be around 885 feet (270 meters) wide, plus or minus a couple of hundred feet (60 meters). But as Apophis approached last weekend, astronomers at the Herschel Space Observatory took new observations and have concluded that astronomers have seriously underestimated both its size and its mass. “The 20 per cent increase in diameter, from 270 to 325m, translates into a 75 per cent increase in our estimates of the asteroid’s volume or mass,” said Thomas Müller of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany. “These numbers are first estimates based on the Herschel measurements alone, and other ongoing ground-based campaigns might produce additional pieces of information which will allow us to improve our results.” In addition, the asteroid has a much different reflectivity, or albedo, than previously thought; 0.23 rather than the previous estimates of 0.33. This changes astronomer’s calculations of the Yarkovsky effect, or how the Sun’s heating and cooling influence will alter the asteroid’s progress in orbit. Apophis caused alarm on Christmas Eve 2004 after a report that it had a 2.7 per cent chance of hitting Earth in 2029, and even if it missed, the encounter could set it up for another strike in 2036.

Korea has the highest suicide rate among the OECD countries. According

But the number of suicides increases 30 percent over the two months after a celebrity commits suicide, according to a study.

Germans unveil 'star wars' laser than can shoot a drone out of the sky from TWO MILES away and cut through a steel girder at 700 yards

Nigeria: Explosion in Lagos port
An oil depot in the port area of the Nigerian city of Lagos has been hit by a major explosion and fire.
The blast, which shook buildings in the Apapa area, happened during a transfer of fuel, the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said.
Firefighters have been at the scene and four people were wounded in the blast, AFP news agency reports.

New York Ferry Crash: Up To 50 Injured

Police have arrested four men in relation to an attack at a Melbourne convenience store by a group dressed as Smurfs.They have questioned three 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old, who handed themselves into police this afternoon.

Victorian police are keen to speak to the group after a 37-year-old man was assaulted at around 1am on December 16 last year outside the convenience store.
Police say 'Papa Smurf' asked the victim for a cigarette, then demanded he light the cigarette first.
The man reportedly refused, before noticing Papa Smurf was accompanied by two other smurfs.

The five-hectare blaze broke out at Taylors Lane at Wallan, about 60km north of Melbourne and home to more than 12,000 people, on Wednesday afternoon and took firefighters two and a half hours to control.
