Tasmania residents counting cost as fire fighting continues
Fire-ravaged communities in Tasmania have spent the night in evacuation centres as a cooler change today is expected to help crews still battling several major blazes.
The fire service has downgraded the bushfire between Forcett and the Tasman Peninsula, in the state's south-east, near where more than 100 homes have been destroyed since Friday.
Another fire at Lake Repulse, in the Upper Derwent Valley, also has a watch and act alert, with firefighters still battling an out-of-control blaze at Dawson Road, east of Ellendale.

Ex-Burglars Say Gun Owner Maps Make Their Jobs Easier, Safer
Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.
The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

Sea Frozen In China As Temperatures Plummet
Temperatures in China have plunged to their lowest in almost three decades, freezing coastal waters and trapping 1,000 ships in ice.
Since late November the country has withstood average temperatures of -3.8C, 1.3C colder than average and the chilliest for 28 years.
The bitter cold has even frozen the sea in Laizhou Bay on the coast of Shandong province in the east, stranding nearly 1,000 ships, the China Daily newspaper reported.

Obama says U.S. can't afford more showdowns over debt, deficits
Fresh from the long legislative fight to prevent a "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts, President Barack Obama warned on Saturday that the United States could not afford further budget showdowns this year or in the future.
Obama, who returned to Hawaii for a family vacation shortly after the House of Representatives passed a compromise bill on Tuesday, said in his weekly radio and Internet address that the new law was just one step toward fixing the country's fiscal and economic problems.

Tsunami warnings for coastal parts of Alaska and Vancouver Island have now been cancelled following an earthquake in the Pacific.
Gerard Fryer, a geophysicist from the Pacific Warning Centre said: "We have seen a small tsunami at Port Alexander 100 miles south of the epicentre.
"The tsunami amplitude was 13cm which suggests there may be troublesome waves in the immediate area of the quake, but beyond that there is no hazard so we do not have a tsunami warning for anywhere else in the pacific."
Homes were shaken in Alaska's state capital of Juneau some 205 miles (330 kilometers) away, The Juneau Empire newspaper reported. But there was apparently no major damage in the city, the largest in the area.

Six Russian Tourists Killed In Snowmobile Crash
A mother and her daughter were among six Russians killed after their snowmobile crashed through a safety barrier and fell 300ft in the Italian Alps.
Two others were seriously injured in the late night tragedy, which police have blamed on excessive speed and icy conditions on the Mount Cermis in north east Italy.
Officials said the run is usually lit at night but it had closed early because of the icy conditions, and was shrouded in darkness when the accident happened on Friday night.

The Flagler County Sheriff's Office reports that the pilot declared an emergency shortly after 2 p.m. Friday, saying that the plane was shaking.
Authorities say the plane hit a Palm Coast home near the Flagler County Airport in Jacksonville, Florida just west of I-95 a few minutes after the pilot's mayday call.

Donna Vanzant: 'He made a promise to help us and he broke it': Hurricane Sandy Victim pictured in embrace with Obama reveals her heartbreak at receiving standardized letter after his visit
When President Obama hugged a tearful New Jersey business owner after Hurricane Sandy ravaged her home and livelihood, it was the image of compassion, promise and hope.
But the victim in the photo, Donna Vanzant, has now revealed that the president's promises to pour aid into the area were empty - and that, after the hug, she merely received a form letter from him.
Obama visited the destroyed marina Ms Vanzant owns in Brigantine, New Jersey on October 31 and promised her 'immediate' aid. Soon after, Ms Vanzant wrote him an email.
'Many days later, I got a response back,' she told the Philadelphia Magazine. 'It was disturbing.
'It had nothing to do with what I was asking him. It was a form letter. It thanked me for supporting the troops. He made a promise to rebuild on national television, and I can't even get this money.'

German chancellor Angela Merkel courts international controversy by posing for photos alongside blacked-up children for annual 'Three Kings Day' celebrations
Fortunately for the CDU leader, the children visiting the Chancellery in Berlin were not a political stunt but traditional carollers dressed up as the three wise men. Although the costumes of the children may appear controversial, the blackened face of the young girl is part of the Sternsinger, or star singer, tradition of Dreikönigstag, the Three Kings' Day.

The dolphin snatchers: Mail investigation exposes vile trade where animals are sold for up to £100,000 each to aquariums where they suffer unimaginable cruelty
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT These barbaric scenes took place at Taiji on the south coast of Japan just before Christmas, during a hunting season when fishermen 'harvest' dolphins to sell to aquariums. It is estimated for every wild dolphin caught to be trained, around four times that number are slaughtered. The fishermen then sell off the meat for about £10 a kilo.

Labour councils still squandering cash as if there were no tomorrow despite claiming cuts had taken them to the brink of civil unrest
For more than a century the horse-drawn carriage, all polished wood and gold inlay, has transported the Lord Mayors of Newcastle as they perform their civic duties.
But not any more. Today, the four-wheeled charabanc is up for grabs to the highest bidder, its sale ordered by Nick Forbes, the Labour leader of the city council.
‘I will always put people before objects,’ he announced late last year. ‘We have endured two years of savage cuts from this Government with another three to come.
