"Iron dome" intercepted only 2-3 of the 30 missiles (there were likely more fired), rendering the system by almost any definition an utter failure. Strangely, the media, especially Israeli media, refuses to recognizes this, putting Israeli citizens in jeopardy. This rocket attack did not kill nor injure anyone aside from a woman who broke her leg running to a shelter (which she obviously shouldn't have had to do in the first place). The counter-airstrikes by Israel killed 4 and injured 30, and such an unbalanced response, like most of Israel's reactions, will no doubt complete the circuit of violence until next round.

EU budget talks break down as cash-strapped member states refuse to plug £6.7 billion funding shortfall

Negotiations over next year's European Union budget have collapsed following a dispute between member states and the European Commission over payment of a £7 billion funding shortfall.

Cash-strapped member states have refused to cover the huge funding black hole for 2012 which the European Commission has requested.

The talks, which essentially ended before they began, could be a sign of trouble ahead for longer-term EU budget issues.

Tempers fray as many in U.S. Northeast still without power

Frustration with continuing power outages, travel chaos, and long lines for gasoline grew on Saturday as residents of Long Island, hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, planned to a protest outside the headquarters of the local utility company.

Residents said they would take to the streets for a second day outside the Long Island Power Authority in Hicksville. There are still over 400,000 customers without power nearly two weeks after the storm, and more than 170,000 are on Long Island.

Sandy refugees say life in tent city feels like prison

It is hard to sleep at night inside the tent city at Oceanport, New Jersey. A few hundred Superstorm Sandy refugees have been living here since Wednesday - a muddy camp that is a sprawling anomaly amidst Mercedes Benz dealerships and country clubs in this town near the state's devastated coastal region.

Inside the giant billowy white tents, the massive klieg lights glare down from the ceiling all night long. The air is loud with the buzz of generators pumping out power. The post-storm housing — a refugee camp on the grounds of the Monmouth Park racetrack - is in lockdown, with security guards at every door, including the showers.

Gaza flares as Israel hits back killing four

Israeli tank fire killed four Palestinians and wounded 25 in the Gaza Strip on Saturday after an anti-tank missile hit an Israeli army jeep wounding four soldiers, and Palestinian fighters fired rockets into southern Israel in a new flare-up of fighting.

In a major clash that carried the risk of escalation, Palestinian militants vowed to take revenge for the deaths of civilians and Israel warned residents of communities near the Gaza border to stay within 15 seconds of their blast shelters.

The casualty toll was one of the highest in a single incident in Gaza in recent months.

U.S. denies Russia request for convicted arms dealer

The United States has refused a request from Russia that convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout be returned to his home country to spend the remainder of his 25-year prison term, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said on Saturday.

Bout, 54, was sentenced in April after a Manhattan federal court trial jury convicted him on charges that he agreed to sell arms to people he thought were militants intent on attacking American soldiers in Colombia.

A police sergeant who was sacked despite being cleared of assaulting a woman in a custody suite must be given his job back, a High Court judge has ruled.

Sgt Mark Andrews was jailed in 2010 for assaulting 60-year-old Pamela Somerville, then had his conviction quashed on appeal.

He was sacked by Wiltshire Police but an appeals tribunal ordered him to be reinstated.
