Smile! US drone pilots are trained by tracking civillian cars as they drive around America

Holloman Air Force Base, at the eastern edge of New Mexico’s White Sands Missile Range, 200 miles south of Albuquerque, was once famous for the daredevil maneuvers of those who trained there. In 1954, Col. John Paul Stapp rode a rocket-propelled sled across the desert, reaching 632 miles per hour, in an attempt to figure out the maximum speed at which jet pilots could safely eject. He slammed on the brakes and was thrust forward with such force that he had to be hauled away on a stretcher, his eyes bleeding from burst capillaries. Six years later, Capt. Joseph Kittinger Jr., testing the height at which pilots could safely bail out, rode a helium-powered balloon up to 102,800 feet. He muttered, “Lord, take care of me now,” dropped for 13 minutes 45 seconds and broke the record for the highest parachute jump.

Today many of the pilots at Holloman never get off the ground. The base has been converted into the U.S. Air Force’s primary training center for drone operators, where pilots spend their days in sand-colored trailers near a runway from which their planes take off without them. Inside each trailer, a pilot flies his plane from a padded chair, using a joystick and throttle, as his partner, the “sensor operator,” focuses on the grainy images moving across a video screen, directing missiles to their targets with a laser.

Holloman sits on almost 60,000 acres of desert badlands, near jagged hills that are frosted with snow for several months of the year — a perfect training ground for pilots who will fly Predators and Reapers over the similarly hostile terrain of Afghanistan. When I visited the base earlier this year with a small group of reporters, we were taken into a command post where a large flat-screen television was broadcasting a video feed from a drone flying overhead. It took a few seconds to figure out exactly what we were looking at. A white S.U.V. traveling along a highway adjacent to the base came into the cross hairs in the center of the screen and was tracked as it headed south along the desert road. When the S.U.V. drove out of the picture, the drone began following another car.

“Wait, you guys practice tracking enemies by using civilian cars?” a reporter asked. One Air Force officer responded that this was only a training mission, and then the group was quickly hustled out of the room. more

Fran Cheney: Philadelphia firefighter won't be penalized for giving his air mask to victim (he also gave her $500 out of his overtime pay so she could get back on her feet). Humanity still reigns.

A Philadelphia firefighter who rescued a woman during a warehouse fire will not face disciplinary action for giving her his breathing mask as they escaped the flames.

Fran Cheney gave his mask to Mary Jackson Wednesday after finding her gasping for breath in a smoked-choked room on the second floor of the warehouse.

“I take a quick breath, rip my helmet off, give her the mask – it’s on positive pressure, which means it just blows smoke away from her and I just say, ‘Let’s go,’” Cheney told MyFoxPhiladelphia.com.

Cheney then carried Jackson to safety before collapsing and being hospitalized with smoke inhalation.

Cheney told MyFoxPhiladelphia.com that one of his bosses criticized his actions during a hospital visit.

“I was told,” said Cheney, ‘that wasn’t very smart.’”

“Protocols are not sharing your air with someone,” Lloyd Ayers told MyFoxPhiladelphia.com.

But “the result made it worth it at that point, and that’s how we look at it,” he said.

Ayers says Cheney will not be reprimanded for breaking the rules.

Cheney also gave Jackson $500 in his overtime pay to get her back on her feet. He said he’d do the same thing again. source

Pinching, purification and finding The Bridge to Total Freedom: Inside a very sinister induction at the Scientology HQ

I'd been pinched – hard – in some kind of strange lie-detector test and seen rooms where people went to be ‘purified’.

I’d spent an hour subjected to a gruelling and invasive ‘personality’ test and revealed my deepest inner thoughts as if hypnotised.

I’d also been invited to cross the Bridge To Total Freedom – but, in a panic, instead I found myself running away from Scientology as fast as I could – after just a day as a guest of the controversial religion.

I look back on my visit last week to Scientology’s Florida headquarters to celebrate July 4 as one of the most unsettling experiences of my life, and yet it all started so innocently...

The invitation from the Scientologists had suggested we celebrate Independence Day at ‘the Friendliest Place in the Whole World’. Why should I refuse? The event sounded fun. There would be a barbecue, pool games, live music, a petting zoo and fireworks – just like other celebrations across America.

However, there was a hint that this party would be different. The invitation also said: ‘Get briefed on Scientology’s exponential expansion across the globe, our penetrating 4th Dynamic Dissemination Campaigns and a full view to our future.’ more

Israel: This time if attacked, we’ll go for Lebanon with all our strength

Brig.-Gen. Hertzl Halevi, commander of the Galilee division posted on the Lebanese border, warned Thursday that in another war with Hizballah, the IDF will go full strength into Lebanon. The potential damage to southern villages will be a lot heavier than the last time because it is there that Hizballah has planted its units. “Both sides will use heavy fire power and both need therefore to do their utmost to prevent his happening.” But without exercising great force, he explained, the IDF cannot prevail and the enemy must take this into account. This was the fourth IDF briefing to reporters in 10 days - an unusual frequency that was not explained. source

Harley Flanagan stormed into a dressing room before a gig and slashed two members of his former band in New York with a hunting knife

A raging punk rocker stormed into a dressing room and slashed two members of his former band with a hunting knife before a gig, it emerged today.

Tattooed skinhead Harley Flanagan, 42, caused chaos when he knifed the pair - one of whom he also bit - at the Cro-Mags concert in New York.

The band, who have a strong cult following, was about to take the stage at Webster Hall, East Village, around 8.15pm when Flanagan burst in.

The band's former bassist, and one of its founders, had forced his way through the venue's VIP section before unleashing his attack.

Law enforcement sources and witnesses told the New York Post that nearly 30 guests on the balcony were sent into a frenzy.

Security guards then jumped on the Jiu-Jitsu expert, who suffered a broken leg, before police handcuffed him to a chair. Read More

85,000 Americans went on disability benefit in June (while only 80,000 jobs were added in same period)

The Obama administration has been touting the economy’s recovery, but the numbers are painting a different picture, namely that more workers joined the federal government's disability program in June than got new jobs, according to two new government reports.

The economy created 80,000 jobs in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.

In contrast, 85,000 workers left the workforce to enroll in the Social Security Disability Insurance program that same month, according to the Social Security Administration.

The disability ranks have been consistently ahead of job growth throughout the past three years, Investor's Business Daily reported.

While the economy has created 2.6 million jobs since June of 2009, as many of 3.1 million people have become recipients of federal disability insurance. Read More

Tremors, gas bubbles puzzle Assumption, Louisiana

Assumption Parish emergency officials have asked to meet with an expert from the U.S. Geological Survey and for portable seismic equipment to get a better understanding of new tremors reported in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou areas, officials said Friday.

The earth tremors are being reported by residents in a swampy area of northern Assumption Parish where venting streams of natural gas have been roiling the surface of waterways for about a month.

The source of the natural gas remains uncertain and is not an explosive risk but detailed tests to fingerprint the source of the leaking gas are pending, said John Boudreaux, director of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

He said company reports posted on the parish’s website are from earlier tests that mainly established that natural gas had been bubbling up through the waterways.

Boudreaux said residents reported tremors last month and again on Tuesday and Wednesday, about 7:30 a.m. each day.

State and parish officials have not made a connection between the tremors and the natural gas releases and are focusing on the oil and gas infrastructure in the area to pinpoint the source of the leaking gas. Read More

Greek socialist leader warns of deeper recession

(Reuters) - Greece needs more time to implement austerity cuts because its recession this year will be deeper than forecast, a Greek coalition leader told its lenders on Saturday, stepping up the country's efforts to win concessions on a bailout package.

Faced with growing anger from cash-strapped voters, Greece's conservative-led government has been aggressively pushing for changes to the policies in a deeply unpopular 130 billion euro ($162.6 billion) bailout deal struck earlier this year.

Socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos pressed the government's case at a meeting with top officials from the so-called troika of European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank lenders in Athens to review Greece's faltering progress on its pledges. Read More

Death toll from Pakistan drone attack rises to 19

(Reuters) - The death toll from a drone strike in northeastern Pakistan has risen to 19, Pakistani intelligence officials said on Saturday.

Twelve people were originally reported dead in Friday's strike on a compound in the Dhattakel region in North Waziristan.

Public anger over U.S. drone attacks has helped inflame tensions between Pakistan and the United States.

Friday's strike took place a day after two trucks carried NATO supplies across the border into Afghanistan -- the first shipments since convoys were halted by Pakistan last November.

Pakistanis say the drone attacks kill civilians and encroach on Pakistani sovereignty. The United States says the attacks are highly selective and that few civilians are killed. Read More

Taliban publicly execute woman near Kabul: officials

(Reuters) - A man Afghan officials say is a member of the Taliban shot dead a woman accused of adultery in front of a crowd near Kabul, a video obtained by Reuters showed, a sign that the austere Islamist group dictates law even near the Afghan capital.

In the three-minute video, a turban-clad man approaches a woman kneeling in the dirt and shoots her five times at close range with an automatic rifle, to cheers of jubilation from the 150 or so men watching in a village in Parwan province.

"Allah warns us not to get close to adultery because it's the wrong way," another man says as the shooter gets closer to the woman. "It is the order of Allah that she be executed".

Provincial Governor Basir Salangi said the video, obtained on Saturday, was shot a week ago in the village of Qimchok in Shinwari district, about an hour's drive from Kabul. Read More

Syria's fighting spills into Lebanon, five killed

(Reuters) - Syria's conflict spilled further into Lebanon on Saturday when mortar fire from President Bashar al-Assad's forces hit villages in the north, killing five people after rebels crossed the border to seek refuge, residents said.

Rebels fighting to unseat Assad have used north Lebanon as a base and his forces have at times bombed villages and even pursued insurgents over the border, threatening to stoke tension in Lebanon, whose sectarian rifts mirror those in Syria.

Residents of Lebanon's Wadi Khaled region said several mortar bombs hit farm buildings five to 20 km (3 to 12 miles) from the border at around 2 a.m. At midday villagers reported more explosions and said they heard gunfire close to the border. Read More

Iraqi suicide bomber kills 7 of own family

A suicide bomber has detonated an explosives-rigged belt at a gathering of his own family in western Iraq, killing his pro-government cousin and six other relatives, officials say.

THE blast targeting a leader in the Sahwa militias in the city of Ramadi is a reminder of how extremism still divides Iraq's Sunni Muslim minority, with some working with insurgents against others who support the Shi'ite-led government.

The killing is part of a surge in violence six months after the last US troops withdrew.

The bomber entered the home of his cousin, the local Sahwa leader, on Friday night as the extended family was gathered for a meal, said a police official in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, 115 kilometres west of Baghdad.

He approached the militiaman and detonated his explosives, killing his target as well as his wife, three of their teenage children, his brother and another relative, said the official.

He could provide no other details including the number of wounded.

A hospital worker in Ramadi confirmed the deaths. Read More

UN rights body to probe Israel settlements

GENEVA — The UN Human Rights Council has set up a panel to probe Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, a move that further irked Israel which said it will bar its access to the sites of inquiry.

Israel severed contacts with the council in March after the 47-member body announced it would investigate the settlements, which are considered illegal under international law, and is blaming the UNHRC for "singling out" Israel.

The council is pressing ahead with the mission, with the appointment on Friday of three independent experts.

"Allow me to reiterate the council's request to Israel ... not to obstruct the process of investigation and to cooperate fully with the mission," said UNHRC president Laura Dupuy Lasserre.

The all-female panel is tasked with carrying out a fact-finding mission "to investigate the implications of the settlements on the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem," said Lassere. Drones strike in North Waziristan

At least 19 people were killed in two rounds of drone attacks on Friday night in North Waziristan, reigniting the diatribe against drones on the eve of a planned ‘Long March to Islamabad’ by right-wing organisations opposed to the reopening of NATO supply lines into Afghanistan.

According to reports coming from Miramshah — the main town of the North Waziristan tribal agency that lies along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border — the missiles fired by the unmanned drones operated by the CIA hit the fortress-like residence of a tribesman. As residents of the area were recovering bodies from this attack, the drones — which were hovering in the area — opened fire again, killing more people.

Though WikiLeaks has disclosed that the drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas have the tacit support of the civil and military leadership of the country, the government’s position is that drones are counter-productive as they tend to alienate the kin of those killed in what the U.S. claims are high-precision attacks based on ground intelligence. Toxoplasmosis parasite tied to self-harm, suicide attempts

Women who are infected with a common parasite may be more likely to hurt themselves or attempt suicide, a new study of over 45,000 new moms in Denmark suggests.

The infection, known as toxoplasmosis, is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Humans can become chronically infected by eating undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables or by handling cat litter, as the parasite is known to multiply in the gut of infected cats.

Toxoplasmosis is often symptom-free, but can be dangerous in people with weak immune systems or during pregnancy, since the parasite may be passed to babies.

Some studies have linked the parasite to a higher chance of developing schizophrenia, and researchers believe because the T. gondii parasite lives in the brain, it could have an effect on emotions and behavior.

For the new report, Dr. Teodor Postolache from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and his colleagues used Danish medical registries to track 45,788 women who were originally included in a study that screened newborn babies for toxoplasmosis.

All of the infants were tested for antibodies against the parasite through a blood sample drawn five to 10 days after birth. Because the babies were still too young to make their own antibodies, any that showed up in their blood would have been passed from moms. more

Annan: international community has failed to solve Syria violence

UN special envoy admits divisions between regional and world powers have made escalating conflict worse.

Kofi Annan has admitted that the international community's efforts to find a political solution to the escalating violence in Syria have failed.

In an interview with Le Monde, Annan, the special envoy for the United Nations and the Arab League, said divisions between regional and world powers over how to resolve the conflict, which has claimed the lives of more than 15,000 Syrians, were making the situation worse.

"The evidence shows that we have not succeeded," he said.

His comments came as the conflict spilled over the border into Lebanon on Saturday when mortar fire from the president Bashar al-Assad's forces hit villages in the north of the neighbouring country, killing five people.

Annan's six-point plan was to begin with a ceasefire in mid-April between government and rebel forces but the truce never took hold. Three hundred UN observers sent to monitor the ceasefire are confined to their hotels because of the escalating violence. Read More

Three women killed as Syrian artillery strikes north Lebanon

Three women were killed and nine people wounded in northern Lebanon on Saturday by rocket fire from Syrian territory and gun battles, a Lebanese security official told AFP.

It was the deadliest incident in the Lebanon-Syria border area since the Syrian revolt broke out nearly 16 months ago.

“Nadia al-Owaichi, 19, was killed in the early morning when a rocket landed on her house in the border region of Wadi Khaled,” the security source said, adding that “the rocket came from Syrian territory.”

“Several hours after, two Bedouin women were killed when shells landed on their tents in the same area,” according to the source.

Nine others were injured, including three children, by falling rockets and exchanges of gunfire, he added.

A local official told AFP on condition of anonymity that clashes broke out at dawn between the Syrian army and gunmen on the Lebanese side.

The Lebanese National News Agency reported that a number of children were wounded and several homes hit when more than 20 shells landed on the area.

Residents fled from several villages in Wadi Khaled “in a state of panic and fear,” the news agency added.

UN May Scale Back Syria Observer Mission

A UN team sent to monitor the uprising in Syria should be reduced, the organisation's secretary-general says, as violence persists.

The UN is looking at pulling observers out of Syria in the face of escalating violence so it can shift its focus to political mediation.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a report submitted to the organisation's Security Council that there were benefits to temporarily reducing the force of about 300 monitors.

They were sent to watch the situation in the country as part of international envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan.

However, violence has intensified in the country in spite of the ceasefire agreed in April.

Mr Ban wrote that without confidence in the political process, there was little more that observers could do to achieve a cessation of violence.

The council is expected to meet on Wednesday to review the mission's mandate, which expires on July 20. Read More

Prince Edward Island and federal governments investigate discovery of dead fish, Canada

COLEMAN, P.E.I. - The P.E.I. and federal governments are investigating after a number of dead fish were found in a tributary of the Trout River, the same area of West Prince where a large fish kill was recorded a year ago.

The province says the Trout Unlimited chapter of Prince County found the dead fish in Barclay Brook in Coleman on Thursday afternoon after a heavy rainfall the night before.

It says samples of soil, foliage and water have been collected for analysis.

The number of fish that were killed wasn't immediately known, but 52 brook trout and one juvenile Atlantic salmon were collected for samples.

A provincial biologist involved in the investigation wasn't available to comment.

Last July, hundreds of dead fish were found in the Trout, Big Pierre Jacques and Mill rivers after heavy rainfalls but officials said it was likely that thousands of fish were killed. Read More
