Republican dissidents blamed for planting bombs in Northern Ireland

Dissident republican paramilitaries left a bomb in Newry that was bigger than the device used in the Omagh massacre, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed.

The device left on Thursday near Newry Canal in south Armagh was a 600lb bomb – 200lb bigger than the air-fuel explosive device that devastated Omagh, causing the biggest single atrocity of the Troubles with the deaths of 29 men, women and children. The Newry bomb was meant to kill members of a passing police patrol, the PSNI also confirmed.

Like the Omagh bomb, the massive device is believed to have been put together by former Provisional IRA "engineers" from south Armagh who subsequently broke from the organisation to form the Real IRA. The aborted attack in Newry took place just hours before dissident republicans mistakenly left a bomb underneath a civilian's car in a loyalist area of Belfast. Security sources said the republican group Oglaigh na hEireann placed the bomb underneath the car because it had once belonged to a retired policeman. However, sources said it had changed hands and was being moved in the Greater Shankill area.

Army bomb disposal officers defused the device and up to 70 homes had to be evacuated. Searches in the nearby republican Ardoyne area recovered guns and ammunition that the PSNI is linking to dissident republicans. Read More

Swine flu clocks 1000 deaths in India‎

NEW DELHI: India has clocked a thousand cases of the dreaded swine flu virus, including 59 deaths being reported this spring and the number expected to go up as the dry weather continues in central and South Central India.

The most affected states viz. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka Rajashthan are among thirteen states affected which have contributed most to the numbers and are known to have dry climates. Providing the figures, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the deaths have come despite government efforts to contain the disease.

Maharashtra accounted for the maximum number of 487 cases and 20 deaths, while Andhra Pradesh reported 115 cases and 12 deaths and Rajasthan had 116 cases with 12 deaths, followed by Karnataka where 171 cases were reported, including eight deaths.

“States have been issued an advisory has been issued to the states for screening and isolation facilities, including critical care,” Azad said.

The Union government, in its efforts, has directed all states to follow guidelines on triage, categorization and testing of patients and 45 laboratories (26 in government sector and 19 in private sector).

Pharmaceutical companies too have decided to restart the manufacture of the swine flu drug Oseltamivir, which they had stopped last year following very few cases as compared to the previous year when the swine flu pandemic was at its height. Read More

Bird flu spreads in Kerala; Indian expats wary of travelling

The spread of H1N1 virus (bird flu) in India, especially the spate of cases in Kerala, is forcing expatriates to rethink their plans to travel home.

Health officials in Kerala have confirmed that H1N1 cases have touched a dozen – the maximum number of cases being reported in district of Kozhikode. Thrissur, Malappuram, Kasargode and Alappuzha have also reported bird flu cases.

Keralite expats in Abu Dhabi said they are worried and are postponing their travel plans. Abdul Jalal, an AC technician from Malappuram, is one among them. Jalal said he is afraid that bird flu may spread rapidly in his district. “People are not very aware and they do not follow good hygiene. I am scared of getting infected. It is better to be cautious,” he said.

Kunji Mohammed, who works in a restaurant in Abu Dhabi, said one of his neighbours in his home town in Kozhikode district was infected. “My mother told me over the phone that she is close to the woman who tested positive last week. I am definitely not going now,” he said. Read More
