Military ensnared in Colombia Secret Service scandal as humiliation spreads

Five U.S. military members have been ordered confined to quarters over possible involvement in inappropriate conduct at the same hotel here as the 11 Secret Service agents sent home in an unfolding scandal involving local prostitutes.

Making the announcement Saturday, United States Southern Command commander Gen. Douglas Fraser said he is “disappointed by the entire incident and that this behavior is not in keeping with the professional standards expected of members of the United States military.” more

US Secret Service agents busted because they refused to pay hooker: source

The dozen Secret Service agents sent home after a prostitution scandal in Colombia were busted after at least one of them refused to pay one of the hookers, sources said.

The scandal — a black eye for the United States’ reputation abroad — was revealed Friday just hours before President Obama arrived in Cartagena for the Summit of the Americas.

The 12 agents were part of an advance team assigned to secure a local hotel before the summit began, yet their attention apparently turned to taking advantage of Colombia’s policy of legal prostitution.

Five American service members were also accused of misconduct stemming from the scandalous incident at the hotel, according to the U.S. military.

“They had arranged to have a bunch of prostitutes come by and one of the agents refused to pay a prostitute,” said author Ronald Kessler, one of the leading experts on the Secret Service.

“Yes, doubly good judgment there.” Kessler, who was briefed on the investigation by his sources within the agency, told the Daily News Saturday that the spurned hooker told police about the lack of payment.

The 12 agents were immediately recalled to Washington.

“Their careers are over,” said Kessler. “Number one, it is against basic ethics to go to a prostitute,” he continued. “Number two, it is incredibly embarrassing to the White House.” “And number three,” he continued. “It could leave them open to blackmail and a possible assassination attempt.” more

Obama's secretary pays higher tax rate than he does

As part of President Barack Obama's push for bringing in the tax raising ‘Buffett Rule’ he has been quick to point out that billionaire investor Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.

However tax returns released by the White House yesterday reveal that the President himself also pays a lower rate of tax than his secretary.

Obama and his wife Michelle reported income of $789,674 last year, on which they paid $162,074 in tax – a rate of 20.5% whereas Obama’s secretary Anita Decker Breckenridge, makes $95,000 a year on which she pays a higher tax rate. Read More

Farrukh Malik stabbed wife 120 times in frenzied killing walks free less than a YEAR after murder as court hears he has recovered

A killer declared insane after stabbing his wife to death less than a year ago walked free after a court heard he has recovered.

Farrukh Malik knifed Sarwat, his partner of 37 years, more than 120 times during the frenzied attack at their north London home after suffering 'depressive psychosis' following the death of his mother.

But the 66-year-old accountant, who is now living with his brother in Slough, Berkshire, was set free after a judge ruled he had no power to detain him because of medical reports which state he is no longer a danger.

The fears of one psychiatrist, who warned his condition could deteriorate again, were set aside after two other doctors said he was a low risk.

Malik a father-of-two, must continue with medical treatment for the next two years.

Setting him free, Judge Gerald Gordon stressed the order was 'not a punishment'. Read More

Tornado Norman, Oklahoma 13th April 2012

Oklahoma City: 3 possible tornadoes

(AP) OKLAHOMA CITY - Tornado sirens sounded across Oklahoma City early Saturday as the nation's midsection braced for what forecasters cautioned could be a day of "life-threatening" storms, with the most dangerous weather expected to develop in the afternoon.

At least three possible tornadoes were reported west and north of the city, though no injuries were immediately reported, said Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management official Michelann Ooten. The National Weather Service, which is working to confirm the tornadoes, said the storms damaged some homes.

The most dangerous weather, however, is expected to develop later in the day. Officials are warning that a large area spanning from Minnesota to Texas could be at risk.

"This could go into certainly to overnight situations, which is always of immense concerns to us," Ooten said.

A tornado watch was issued this morning for portions of central Kansas and Northwest Oklahoma, effective until 6:00 p.m. CT., and for Nebraska through 7:00 p.m. CT, in what the weather service called "a particularly dangerous situation. Read More

Sudan air raid kills 'five'

JUBA — A Sudanese air raid on a border city in South Sudan killed five civilians Saturday, a local official said, as Juba's army claimed to still be in control of the disputed oil hub of Heglig.

A Sudanese plane bombed Bentiu, capital of South Sudan's oil-rich border state of Unity, leaving five people dead and six others wounded, state government spokesman Gideon Gatfan said.

"Five traders have been killed," he told AFP. "The bomb fell next to a place where cars are being sold.

"We also found that six people were wounded including one woman and they are now admitted to Bentiu Hospital," he said.

Gatfan said earlier that the raid had failed to destroy its target, a bridge linking Bentiu to a road leading to the border between Sudan and South Sudan some 60 kilometres (35 miles) to the north, the theatre of fierce clashes in recent days. Read More

Tuna Recalled Amid Salmonella Outbreak

A California fish processor has recalled nearly 59,000lbs (26,700kg) of a raw yellowfin tuna product that has been linked to a salmonella outbreak which has affected more than 100 people across the US.

The country's food authorities said the tuna - used in sushi and sashimi dishes at restaurants and in supermarket meals - may be to blame for the widespread illness.

So far a total of 116 people in 20 states and the District of Columbia have suffered salmonella poisoning, with many reporting they had eaten raw tuna in sushi.

New York has been the worst-hit state, with 24 people reported sick, while 11 were reported to be ill Maryland and 10 in Illinois.

No deaths have been reported, but 12 people have been treated in hospital.

The US food and drug administration (FDA) said Moon Marine USA Corporation, also known as MMI, has recalled its Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA products - "tuna backmeat, which is specifically scraped off from the bones".

The FDA added the product was not sold to individuals, only restaurants and supermarkets. Read More

UN Team To Monitor Syria's Fragile Ceasefire

The UN Security Council has unanimously voted in favour of sending a team of monitors into Syria to observe the ceasefire amid reports of fresh violence.

The vote, made on a Western-Arab UN draft resolution, comes two days after the truce between the Syrian government and anti-regime protesters began.

Resolution 2042 calls on President Bashar al Assad's regime to allow access for the first wave of monitors. Up to 30 unarmed military observers are expected to leave within days.

A new resolution with a full mandate will be required for the full monitoring mission of more than 200 observers.

The Council has also threatened to consider "further steps" if Syria does not "implement visibly" all its commitments under UN special envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan.

It includes the withdrawal of all troops and heavy guns from Syrian cities, permitting humanitarian and media access, releasing prisoners and discussing a political transition. Read More

France Serial Killers: 'Suspects Held Over Serial Murders'

Police in France have reportedly arrested two suspects in connection with four murders, which authorities fear may have been committed by a serial killer.

One suspect was said to be a 33-year-old man and described by La Monde as "very serious".

The publication said he was arrested on Saturday afternoon at Draveil in the Essonne region, south of Paris.

The second person in custody was reportedly arrested in Paris.

The four victims, killed between November 27 last year and April 5, were all shot dead with the same gun near their homes in Essonne.

In each murder the gunman reportedly fled on a motorbike - recalling the method used by Islamist extremist Mohammed Merah.

Merah was killed by officers in southern France last month after committing seven murders.

Authorities have said, however, that nothing has suggested any political or religious motives are behind the Essonne shootings. Read More

Piermario Morosini, Italian Footballer Dies After Collapsing On Pitch

Hospital officials in Italy have said a footballer who collapsed on the pitch today has died after a cardiac arrest.

The Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini was playing against Pescara in a Serie B game when he fell to the ground.

Witnesses have said Morosini, 25, tried to get back up but then collapsed again.

A doctor told Italian media: "He suffered a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately he was already dead when the ambulance arrived. He never regained consciousness."

There have been reports that a police car had blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium, delaying the arrival of paramedics and specialist equipment.

The match was abandoned after 31 minutes with other players in tears.

And the Italian federation has called off all league games for the rest of the weekend.

Morosini was capped as an under-21 player and on loan to Livorno from Serie A side Udinese.

The incident comes just weeks after Bolton Wanderers' player Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field in a live televised game against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Read More

New North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emphasizes 'military first'

PYONGYANG: Hours after a failed rocket launch criticized abroad as a covert test of missile technology, North Korea's new leader underlined the country's ``military first'' policy with a budget that allocates a sizable chunk of funding to defense spending.

North Korea's legislature also rubber-stamped Kim Jong Un's leadership of the country and promoted a host of relatively younger military officials to the powerful National Defense Commission, state-run media reported Saturday, in a strong indication that will have an overarching role in policy, just as it did under his father, late leader Kim Jong Il.

Still, Premier Choe Yong Rim told legislators the nation's top priority is to build up the economy and improve the people's standard of living, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly convened Friday for a special one-day session to ratify appointments and promotions, discuss this year's budget and to make constitutional amendments to formalize Kim Jong Un's leadership of the country. Read More

Russia Orders Syria AND the Opposition To Obey Peace Plan

Russia has reportedly called on all sides in Syria to "strictly" obey UN envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan, after forces loyal to the government shelled the city of Homs.

The reports of violence come two days after a ceasefire began and ahead of a United Nations Security Council vote later on a Western-Arab draft resolution authorising a team to monitor the fragile ceasefire.

The draft calls on the regime to allow access for up to 30 unarmed military observers.

It is unclear how many additional monitors will be sent in the coming weeks, but diplomatic sources suggest as many as 500.

The Russian foreign ministry said: "The resolution on the deployment into Syria of a UN monitoring mission advance group has been practically agreed for adoption at the UN Security Council."

The Council has threatened to consider "further steps" if Syria does not comply. Read More

'Syrian Forces Shell Homs Ahead Of UN Vote'

Syrian forces loyal to President al Assad have shelled the city of Homs in the first bombings since a ceasefire began two days ago, it has been claimed.

The reports of violence comes ahead of a United Nations Security Council vote later on a Western-Arab draft resolution authorising a team to monitor the fragile ceasefire.

It is still unclear if Russia, one of Assad's allies, can be persuaded to pass the draft, which calls on the regime to allow access for up to 30 unarmed military observers.

It is unclear how many additional monitors will be sent in the coming weeks, but diplomatic sources suggest as many as 500.

Amnesty: Not much has changed in Bahrain

Human rights campaigners Amnesty International have issued a damning report into the current state of Bahrain a week ahead of the staging of the grand prix.

Motor sport's world governing body, the FIA, confirmed the race is to go ahead on April 22 on the basis they are "satisfied all security measures air in place". Amnesty, however, claim in the opening line of their release that "the human rights crisis in Bahrain is not over".

The report adds: "Despite the authorities' claims to the contrary, state violence against those who oppose the Al Khalifa family rule continues. In practice, not much has changed in the country since the brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters in February and March 2011."

It was that crackdown and the subsequent deaths of a number of demonstrators and imprisonment of many others that resulted in the cancellation of last year's grand prix. This year's event was understood to be in the balance until the FIA finally stuck their head above the parapet and declared the event safe to attend.

Those words were echoed by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone who said "there is nothing happening", claiming to know people there who have said it is "all very quiet and peaceful". Read More

Sumatra quake reveals new Alarming information

(CNN) -- The undersea earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday was the largest earthquake of its type ever recorded and has increased the risk of more powerful quakes in the region, a leading expert has said.

Director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore, Kerry Sieh, told CNN that the 8.6 Richter scale undersea earthquake was the largest "strike-slip" quake - steep structures where the two sides of the fault slip horizontally past each other - ever recorded.

"Before that we thought that 8.1 was as big as they get, but this 8.6 quake was phenomenal," Sieh said. "It has been absolutely jaw-dropping and has caused a lot of foment among seismologists."

He said the quake had provided two new insights for seismologists.

Firstly, that strike-slip earthquakes, which are normally not as powerful as mega-thrust quakes where one plate runs underneath another, could be this powerful. Secondly, that big earthquakes of this type could run as deep as the Earth's mantle, the viscous layer beneath the Earth's crust.

"We are learning details about the nature of the ruptures," he said. "What are the fits and starts of the fault? How does the fault break?"

Likening the tectonic plates to a group of 10 men holding onto an elephant with a rope, he said that pressure on the plates becomes greater as the struggle becomes unequal.

"Finally, when one of the guys slips and can't hold the rope what happens is that the nine other guys are holding his 10%, so they have to add 10% more effort to hold on," he said, adding that when a further man falls the remaining eight have an extra 20% of the force to contend with.

"Eventually what you have is a cascade of failures and the last guy has to let go and the tectonics win and the fault moves," Sieh said. "What we had in Sumatra between 2004 and 2007 was pop! Pop! Pop! Three great earthquakes; 9.2, 8.7, 8.4."

He said that Wednesday's earthquake was likely to have increased the stress on the plate boundaries near Aceh, increasing the risks of another major earthquake in the same area as the 2004 disaster.

"There's still one or two patches left to go," Sieh said. Read More

28 al Qaeda killed, Yemen says

(CNN) -- Twenty-eight suspected members of al-Qaeda were killed Friday in the city of Lord, in Yemen's Abyan province, in military operations, state media reported.

Counterterrorism forces were chasing "the rest of the retreating terrorists" into the mountains, the SABA news agency said.

The government has said that such military operations will continue in what is its most intense phase of attacks since the February inauguration of Yemen's new president, Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi.

The military committee, the country's highest security authority, has said the government will not allow al Qaeda to expand and will use an iron fist against the militants in the country's southern provinces.

This month, Yemen poured thousands of troops into the country's south to battle al Qaeda fighters and tighten security, officials said. Yemeni warplanes bombarded al Qaeda hideouts all week in a series of U.S.-supported airstrikes in Abyan and Lahj provinces. Read More

Plains states brace for tornadoes

No serious injuries were immediately reported in Norman, home to the University of Oklahoma.

(CNN) -- A tornado touched down late Friday afternoon in Norman, Oklahoma, bringing scattered structural damage and a taste of more severe weather -- including a tornado outbreak -- expected Saturday in the Plains.

No serious injuries were immediately reported in Norman, home to the University of Oklahoma and the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters have said there is a "high risk" of severe thunderstorms on Saturday in portions of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma.

A severe thunderstorm is defined by the National Weather Service as a thunderstorm that produces at least one or more of the following: winds of at least 58 mph, hail 1 inch in diameter and tornadoes.

According to CNN meteorologist Sean Morris, "high risk" areas could possibly endure EF3 to EF5 tornadoes, packing winds of 136 mph or stronger. Read More

Bomb Explosion overshadow Colombia summit

(CNN) -- President Barack Obama is putting an international spin on his domestic economic agenda with planned trade talks at a weekend summit in Colombia, which is bringing together most of the hemisphere's leaders.

But separate security incidents -- one involving bomb blasts and the other the Secret Service -- overshadowed the start of the sixth Summit of the Americas in Cartagena.

Obama plans to focus on economy, trade, energy and regional security, and is also expected to highlight democratic and social reforms with 33 of the region's 35 leaders.

The president arrived in the Colombian coastal resort city Friday, a visit that will mark the most time a U.S. president has spent in that country, where security concerns had limited previous presidential trips. Read More

Tsunami-threatened district in Shizuoka Pref. city considers move to high ground, Japan

NUMAZU, Shizuoka -- One entire district of Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, is considering moving to higher ground to avoid a tsunami experts have predicted could hit following a major earthquake off the coast.

If the Uchiuraomosu district and its some 440 residents make the move, it aims to become the first to receive public funds pre-disaster under a disaster-prevention community relocation project. However, there are problems, such as paying for construction after the move and resistance to the plan among some residents.

Many homes in the district are less than five meters above sea level, and the prefecture predicts that if the expected Tokai quake occurs, the area will be hit by a 10.4-meter tall tsunami. At a local meeting on March 18, members of 92 households were present or represented, and around 80 percent agreed to move to higher ground. If the project is approved, the national government will cover three-fourths of the costs for acquisition and preparation of land, while the remainder will be footed by the local government.
