Sandy devastates the East Coast leaving Atlantic City underwater

It is still unclear what has happened to 500 people who were stranded on the town's barrier island, pictured. They were unable to escape before Sandy rolled in. The 1,000-mile-wide storm lashed towns and cities up and down the East Coast, with three million left without power, the 911 system inundated with 10,000 calls every half an hour and cars floating down flood-hit streets in New York City.
