US Battens Down As Isaac Hits Florida Coast

Tropical storm Isaac is lashing the Florida Keys as three American states declare states of emergency while they brace for the sprawling storm.

Parts of the US Gulf Coast are in preparation mode on fears Isaac will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

The storm also remains on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

After passing the Florida Keys, Isaac is expected it to turn northwest and strike as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

The National Hurricane Centre issued a hurricane warning for a large swathe of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, Louisiana - which includes the New Orleans area - to Destin, Florida.
