6.2 Magnitude Earthquake SOUTH OF PANAMA - 4th June 2012

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck South of Panama at a depth of 9.7 km (6 miles), the quake hit at 00:45:15 UTC Monday 4th June 2012
The epicenter was 346 km (214 miles) South of David, Panama
Local Tsunami Warning Issued - No Reports of Damage or Injuries at this time

Note: Initially measured at 6.6 Magnitude before being downgraded to a 6.2 Magnitude

LOCATION - SOUTH OF PANAMA
MAGNITUDE - 6.6

EVALUATION

NO DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.

HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES
IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS
POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.
