Soda Bomb Alert: Flight aborted after soft drink can scare resulting in emergency landing at Melbourne Airport

A soft drink can with the word bomb written on it caused an international flight to make an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport this afternoon

The can was found onboard the flight, bound for Mauritius via Perth, shortly after take off.

The captain decided to return to Melbourne as a precaution and the plane was being searched by authorities.

All passengers on the aircraft have been interviewed and explosives investigators have examined the can.

Police Superintendent Peter O'Neil says the captain made the right decision.

"I don't think the passengers were panicked as such, I think the airline handled it really well," he said.

"Safety comes first - they retuned the plane to a safe location and we're addressing those issues."

A large contingent of fire trucks was on hand when the plane landed.
Passengers left the aircraft, and an airline spokesman said no-one was in danger. Source
