Canberra Times staff on strike, Australia

About 70 workers with the Fairfax-owned Canberra Times have walked off the job over proposed job cuts at the Illawarra Mercury and Newcastle Herald newspapers.

They are among the 800 journalists who are striking over plans to send 66 sub-editing positions at the regional newspapers to New Zealand.

A Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance meeting was held at the Canberra Times this morning and members voted unanimously to strike until Friday morning.

Literary editor Gia Metherell says staff are very concerned about the offshoring of production jobs.
