Tony West the Lawyer who defended 'American Taliban' fighter appointed to Justice Department... overseeing Guantanamo

The new lawyer appointed to oversee Justice Department policy toward detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp worked as a defense attorney for a fighter who admitted to fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Tony West, who was appointed as acting associate attorney general -- the number three spot at the agency -- represented the so-called 'American Taliban' John Walker Lindh.

At least one Justice Department critic is calling the appointment unsavory, given West's previous client.

As the lead defense lawyer for Lindh, who was charged with conspiracy to murder US citizens and aiding al-Qaeda and the Taliban, West was often the public spokesman for the young American.

Lindh was detained when he surrendered with group of foreign fighters in Afghanistan shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Read More
