Hans Blix and El Baradei: The World Is Poorer Without Them

During a recent ‘Hard Talk’ program in the BBC, the UN’s former chief weapon inspector, Hans Blix was asked why Saddam Hussein of Iraq acted as if he had the weapons of mass destruction despite the fact that he did not have any. Blix with a sarcastic smile replied ‘there are some who hang the board ‘Beware of dog’ never had any dog, but it served as a deterrent and it really worked too’.

What we see now in the world is just the opposite, many who have the vicious dogs but they refrain from putting up any warning signs! This good professor, who has an impressive track record when it comes to identifying illegal weapons of mass destruction, famously told the world that Saddam Hussein did not possess any of those he is accused of, although Bush and Blair were never prepared to listen to him. He was proved absolutely right. On the present Iranian crisis Blix says that he does not believe Iran possesses a nuclear threat, and puts forward a powerful argument in support of his thesis.

The former Director General of the IAEA (1997-2009) Mohamed El Baradei repeatedly downplayed claims of possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program. The IAEA Board of Governors and UN Security Council have always commended El Baradei for ‘professional and impartial efforts’ to resolve all outstanding issues with Iran. Read More
