Women will be given the right to ask police whether a new boyfriend has a history of violence under plans to be announced today.

‘Clare’s Law’ will allow the police to answer women – and men – who ask if their partner has any previous convictions for violence or sex crimes.

But tougher proposals allowing police to disclose information to family or friends who are worried about a loved one’s new partner are understood to have been rejected.

Instead, there will be strict controls and police will have the right to reject requests.
