Malaria Deaths Twice As High As Thought

New research has shown that malaria is killing almost twice as many people globally than was previously thought.

More than 40% of victims are older children and adults, contradicting the belief that the majority of deaths occur among under-fives.

Scientists from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, US, found the disease claimed 1.2 million lives worldwide in 2010.

That is nearly twice the number cited in a report published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) last year.

The team, led by Dr Christopher Murray, analysed all available data on malaria mortality from 1980 to 2010.

Their findings, published in The Lancet medical journal, showed consistently higher death tolls than those in the 2011 World Malaria Report. Read More
