Syrian forces pound western city in battle against defectors - 28th Sept 2011

Syrian forces shelled the country's western city of Al-Rastan, just north of Homs, for a second consecutive day Wednesday in a battle against military defectors, opposition activist groups reported.

Syrian jets supported government ground forces in an attack on the city intended to put down a revolt challenging President Bashar al-Assad's hold on power, said the Local Coordination Committees of Syria -- a network of opposition activists who organize and document anti-government demonstrations.

The Syrian army was fighting units that had defected from the military, said the LCC and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based opposition group.

In eastern neighborhoods of Homs, a series of bombs exploded Wednesday night, said Omar Edelbi, an LCC spokesman.

Five civilians and four military defectors were killed in Al-Rastan, said Rami Abdul Rahman, head of the observatory. Nationwide, the death toll was 17, the group said, citing another five in Homs, two in Daraa and one in Banias, he said. Read More

Two Hurt After Blast At Crewe Train Station - 29th Sept 2011

A man and a woman have been injured after a faulty underground cable sparked a series of explosions near Crewe railway station.

Manhole covers on Nantwich Road were blown off in the blasts.

The two injured people were taken to hospital suffering from arm and facial burns.

The incident caused a power failure that led to the railway station being temporarily closed while emergency services made the area safe.

Passengers experienced delays as trains were held outside the station.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police have no information to suggest anything suspicious has happened and are working with British Transport Police and utility companies to establish the cause."

Scottish Power later said it was their faulty cable and 3,000 properties in the area around Crewe station lost power at around 8pm.

Michael Cohen Loses Legs In Cape Town Shark Attack, South Africa - 28th Sept 2011

A British man has lost his legs in a shark attack after he ignored a warning not to go swimming at a South African beach.

The 42-year-old, who has not yet been named, ignored signs at the beach in Cape Town warning against entering the water.

Authorities said he was attacked by a great white shark at Fish Hoek Beach.

The attack came an hour-and-a-half after shark spotters had seen the animal and raised a warning flag.

A siren was also sounded as the beach was closed, officials said in a statement.

The man went swimming anyway and the great white struck before onlookers could pull him out.

His right leg was completely bitten off and his left leg severed below the knee, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute. Read More

Decapitated Heads left outside Mexican School - 29th Sept 2011

Mexican police have found five decomposing heads left in a sack outside a primary school in Acapulco.

Handwritten messages were also found, reportedly threatening the state governor as well as local drug lords.

It was not clear if the discovery of the heads and five decapitated bodies elsewhere in the city was linked to extortion threats against teachers.

Dozens of schools have been closed since last month after teachers went on strike over security concerns.

Police were called to a street in the Garita neighbourhood of Acapulco on Tuesday morning.

There they found a sack inside a wooden crate placed near the school, officers said.

Inside were the heads of five men, as well as the threatening messages.

Threats

Police had earlier discovered five headless bodies in another part of the city, left either inside or near a burned-out vehicle.

Acapulco, on Mexico's Pacific coast, has seen several episodes of gruesome violence as drug gangs fight for control of the resort city. Read More

Rezwan Ferdaus Arrested for planning to blow up Pentagon with model airplanes - 29th Sept 2011

A man was arrested Wednesday and accused of plotting an assault on the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol using remote-controlled aircraft armed with explosives — the latest of several terrorism cases to spring from federal sting operations.

Rezwan Ferdaus was arrested in Framingham, Massachusetts, after undercover federal agents delivered materials he had allegedly requested, including grenades, six machine guns and what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosive. Federal officials said the public was never in danger from the explosives, which it said were always under control and closely monitored.

Wednesday's arrest was similar to other cases in which reputed would-be terrorists were caught in sting operations that revolved around fictional plots against various targets, such as Dallas skyscapers or a Chicago nightclub. In this case, though, authorities say Ferdaus planned the scheme.

According to a federal affidavit, Ferdaus, 26, of Ashland, became convinced America was evil through jihadi websites and videos, and began planning "jihad" against the U.S. in early 2010. He contacted a federal informant that December and months later, allegedly began meeting to discuss the plot with undercover federal agents he believed were members of al-Qaida.

Ferdaus said he wanted to deal a psychological blow to the "enemies of Allah" by hitting the Pentagon, which he called "head and heart of the snake," according to the affidavit. Read More

Canadian PM Harper says world economic outlook 'not so positive'

Prime Minister Stephen Harper emerged from a meeting with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney in Ottawa saying the world economic picture is "not so positive."

Flaherty and Carney were briefing Harper Tuesday on last weekend's meetings in Washington with the International Monetary Fund and G20 finance ministers and central bankers.

The update was to prepare Harper for a summit of G20 leaders in Cannes, France, on Nov. 3.

Flaherty and Carney meet regularly, but it is less frequent that they also confer with the prime minister as well.

Harper said he heard positive comments about the Canadian economy during his recent visit to the United States, but growing concerns about the global economy have raised questions about what the fallout will be in Canada.
