
Iceland 27th Feb 2011 saw a increase of over 100% in earthquakes in the region of Krysuvik, with more than 360 earthquakes registering in the past 48 hours with a shallow depth of between 1 and 2 kilometers.
Known Volcanoes in the area are as following:
- KrÃsuvÃk is a system of eruptive fissures, craters and small basalt shields in SW Iceland west of lake Kleifarvatn. A large eruption occurred from the Ogmundargigar fissure in 1188.
Current Status: Dormant - Eruption Style: Effusive (lava flows)
Known Eruptions: 1075, 1100, 1151 and 1188
- Brennisteinsfjöll volcanic system, located east of Kleifarvatn lake, consists of a series of NE-SW-trending crater rows and small shield volcanoes.
Current Status: Dormant - Eruption Style: Effusive (lava flows)
Known Eruptions: 1000 (?), 1188 (?), 1200 (?) and 1341
- Reykjanes volcano is located in SW Iceland at the point where the Mid Atlantic Ridge meets the surface.
Current Status: Dormant - Eruption Style: Effusive (lava flows)
Known Eruptions: 1211
UPDATE: 18.52pm - The earthquakes show no sign of slowing down and have now reached 436 quakes in the past 48hrs - today 27th Feb 5 Quakes occured of 3Mag or more.
