Russia Protests: Political System 'Exhausted'

President Dmitry Medvedev has acknowledged failings in Russia's political system as about 3,000 demonstrators gathered for a second weekend of protests in response to allegations of voting fraud.

The protests follow parliamentary elections on December 4, in which the ruling United Russia party retained a majority but lost a significant number of seats in the State Duma.

The Russian leadership has presented somewhat mixed messages in response to the unrest, rejecting calls to reopen elections but criticising the existing model as "exhausted".

During a meeting with members of United Russia, Mr Medevedev: "We will clearly have a new stage of development in our political system.

"This should not be ignored. It has already begun, and it began not as a result of some demonstrations - these are only the outer signs of people's discontent." Read More
