Welsh Miner Rescue: One of the Four Trapped Miners found dead - 16th Sept 2011

One of four men who were trapped in a flooded mine in South Wales has been found dead, police have said.

The identity of the man, who was found by rescuers overnight, is not yet known.

He was in a different section to the other three men in Gleision Colliery near Cilybebyll in the Swansea Valley.

The rescue mission for the other three men continues and police say they remain "hopeful".

Chris Margetts, of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, said during a news conference it was "quite possible the team has been split".

Superintendent Phil Davies told reporters at the scene: "A miner has been found. He is deceased.

"We are not in a current position to recover him from the mine and therefore we don't know the identity of that person.

"This is a dynamic, ongoing search and rescue operation and all emergency services are working hard to get all the miners out of there as soon as possible."
