Notting Hill Carnival 2011: Police seize 40 suspects in clampdown after tip-off that rioters will cause chaos at Notting Hill Carnival - 25th Aug 2011

Police swooped yesterday on suspected gangsters plotting to cause mayhem at the Notting Hill Carnival.

Scotland Yard seized 40 suspects in raids across the capital amid fears that the annual bank holiday event might be used as an excuse for further disorder following the riots earlier this month.

Up to 10,000 police officers will be deployed across the capital this weekend to combat any trouble in the biggest policing operation in the event’s history.

Carnival organisers plan to double the number of stewards, with up to 700 to ensure that Europe’s biggest street party, which normally attracts crowds of a million, passes peacefully.

Yesterday’s arrests came after officers picked up ‘chatter’ on social networking sites about gangs plotting to disrupt the carnival.

Officers are also concerned that while their attention is directed at the Notting Hill event, opportunist criminals and thugs will attempt to cause disorder or loot elsewhere. Read More
