16 killed in Kohistan flash floods, Pakistan - 25th Aug 2011

At least 16 people were killed when flash floods swept through a valley in the Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Express 24/7 reported on Thursday.

Dozens of houses were destroyed by the flood, which was triggered by heavy rains and land sliding overnight in Kundian valley.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) spokesman Ahmed Kamal said the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) had confirmed that 16 bodies had been recovered but the death toll could rise to 30-35.

Kamal said the provincial authority had requested that helicopters be sent in for relief efforts.

Hundreds of people are still stranded in remote areas of the flood-hit region.

Rescue efforts are underway to evacuate flood victims and recover bodies. Source
