More dead fish wash up on Collier County beaches, Florida - 23rd July 2011

More than 100 large dead fish of varying species washed up along Collier County beaches this morning, extending a fish kill that experts had considered largely over Wednesday.

A non-toxic algae was blamed for the dead fish washing up at Vanderbilt Beach last week. Today, dead and dying fish washed up between Third Avenue South and Seventh Avenue South, said Naples harbor master Roger Jacobsen.

The dead and dying fish are clustered in separate “mounds” in the water for some unknown reason, Jacobsen said.

“It’s really, really unique looking. It’s sad, but unique looking,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”

The fish have largely been cleared from the beach, but small numbers continued to wash up this afternoon. Source
