Heavy rain kills 2, destroys property in Ijebu North, Nigeria - 26th July 2011

The torrential rain in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State which caused serious floods, has claimed the lives of two people with many injured and property worth several millions of naira destroyed. This has caused panic among residents of the local government area.

At about six o clock in the evening on Thursday, July 21, one Mr. Kehinde Mustapha, a 60- year-old ram slaughter died in a severe flood that occurred on Ogbere-Igbaire bridge, opposite Labaika’s house in Oke-Agbo area of Ijebu Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government area of the state. It also recorded yet another causality in Ago-Iwoye area of the local government a few days before.

Late Mustapha, on this fateful day was returning home after a visit to one of his children and on getting to Labaika area, there was a severe flood arising from the downpour, and in an effort to manoeuvre through a portion of the bridge where there was low level of water, luck ran against him when he was swept away by the flood with his motorbike.

The eldest daughter of the deceased, Sakirat Mustapha, while explaining her last meeting with her father who visited her around 5:00 p.m. before the incident happened said, she did not know that her father wanted to see her for the last time when he insisted on seeing her that day.

According to an eye witness who craved anonymity, “that was how majority of people in that area risked passing through when it rained like this, but the deceased was just unlucky on this day.”

Also, in Odoyangburin area of Olopomerin in Ago-Iwoye, a dilapidated storey building collapsed and fell on top of a bungalow beside it, leaving one dead and two others injured. The incident which occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, July 18, claimed the live of a 10-year-old boy, Osiyomi Odubanwo and injured two other children of the same parents. While Miss Funmilayo Odubanwo, 14-year-old girl sustained leg injury, Damilare Odubanwo, 16, sustained back injury and the duo had since been rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
