Anthony Sowell the Cleveland serial killer found guilty for the murders of 11 women whose remains were found in his home - 22nd July 2011

A Cleveland jury found Anthony Sowell guilty today of killing 11 women whose remains were found in and around his home.

Sowell, 51, faces the possibility of the death penalty.

The case next moves to the 'mitigation' phase, so the jury can determine whether or not the former U.S. Marine should be executed.

Many of the victims had histories of drug problems or were transients, and their disappearances were not always immediately reported to police. Sowell had claimed that bad smells in the area came from a nearby sausage factory.

Police discovered the first two bodies in 2009 after executing a search warrant for Sowell's arrest in response to an assault and rape charge.

Over the next week, more women's bodies were found in Sowell's Cleveland house and buried in shallow graves in the backyard. The discoveries included a skull in a bucket.

The jury found Sowell guilty of aggravated murder, kidnapping, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence for all 11 victims. Read More
