Neil Flanagan, 27, and 21-year-old woman Released as Father is Still held over Burglar Death - 24th June 2011

Two people arrested yesterday on suspicion of murdering a suspected burglar have been released without charge - but police are continuing to question a 59-year-old man.

Neil Flanagan, 27, and 21-year-old woman - believed to be his girlfriend - were arrested following the death of John Leonard Bennell in Salford just before midnight on Wednesday.

Peter Flanagan, who was also arrested on suspicion of murder and is reported to be the father of the released 27-year-old, remains in police custody.

Shortly before Mr Bennell, from Hyde, was found dead on Hospital Road, police were called to a nearby house - Ethel Avenue, Pendlebury - following reports of a burglary.

Greater Manchester Police said four men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas tried to break into the house on Wednesday.

The victim was then apparently carried away by accomplices as they fled.

A second call alerted officers to the victim a short distance from the property and he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have made an appeal to the public to try to trace his three accomplices.

A large area around the house in the Pendlebury area of Salford has been cordoned off by police tape as detectives continue their investigation.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan, Salford divisional commander for Greater Manchester Police, said: "Clearly this is a shocking incident and a man has lost his life. Read More
