State of Emergency declared in La Crosse - 23rd May 2011

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The State of Wisconsin says that Mayor Matt Harter has declared a state of emergency in the City of La Crosse in the wake of Sunday's severe storms and possible tornado.

The Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says that La Crosse County Emergency Management estimates that 200 homes and businesses were damaged.

Storm damage on the southside of La Crosse cut a swath approximately three to four blocks wide and a mile in length.

At this point, there are reports, according to the state, of two minor injuries.

Earlier in the evening, there was a evacuation of the affected area due to a gas leak, but that has since been lifted.

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center was not hit directly, but did lose power. A spokesperson says that the hospital and clinic do have power. The Founder's Building and East Building are operating on backup power.

Crews are working to restore power to approximately 5,800 customers in La Crosse and Monroe Counties.

WEM also reports that three people were injured in Wood County from the storm.

One person was reported killed by the tornado that struck the Minneapolis area Sunday afternoon. Source
