Tories plunge closer to war over Europe referendum as MPs reject David Cameron’s olive branch

The Conservatives plunged closer to civil war over Europe today as backbenchers rejected an olive branch from the Prime Minister while Cabinet minister Kenneth Clarke said leaving the EU would be “reckless”.

Trench warfare between ministers and MPs overshadowed David Cameron’s attempt to unite his party by publishing a draft Bill to enshrine an in/out referendum before 2017.

Ominously, the number of Tory MPs signing a motion that criticises the Queen’s Speech for lacking any such commitment rose to 81 including ministerial aide Gavin Barwell, the Croydon Central MP, and fellow Londoners Bob Blackman and Nick de Bois.
