Female U.S. sailor, 19, found shot dead on board aircraft carrier

A female Navy sailor was reportedly discovered with a gunshot wound aboard a San Diego-based ship and died soon after.

Navy spokesman Rick Chernitzer says the 19-year-old woman was found shot aboard the Amphibious Assault Ship Essex and taken Thursday to the trauma center at the University of California, San Diego where she was pronounced dead.

The ship’s medical personnel responded to the scene and found the wounded sailor, Chernitzer said.

U-T San Diego reported that the Navy has not said whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or if any suspects are in custody.
