Britain submerged in Europe is the last thing America should want

SIR – Has Philip Gordon, the US assistant secretary responsible for European affairs (“US urges Britain to remain in the EU”, report, January 10), lost his marbles?

Forcing Britain to stay in the EU would effectively eclipse British power and influence, and Washington would soon find itself talking to Baroness Ashton and her preposterous External Action Service.

Furthermore, Brussels won’t tolerate a continuation of the long and close Anglo-American intelligence partnership unless it can share in it. If the United States bullies Britain to stay in the EU, the National Security Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency will pack their bags for home rather than divulge sensitive material to the French, Germans and Italians.
