Cyril McLavin killed when his vintage plane plunged into the sea had been giving children rides along the runway moments before crash

Cyril McLavin, pictured with his 1946 Globe GC1-A (left), died with his friend when the small aircraft crashed into the Moriches Inlet in Long Island, New York. Emergency workers (right) spent hours looking for the pair but could not save them. Mr McLavin, from Co. Westmeath in Ireland, had spent the day at a charity event at Brookhaven Airport. He had saved for years to own a plane, and only bought the aircraft during the summer.
