56 die in Burma violence, 2000 homes burnt

AT least 56 people have been killed and thousands of homes have been torched in a wave of communal violence in western Burma.

"Twenty-five men and 31 women have been killed in four townships and 2000 houses were burnt," Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said on Friday.

The deaths follow an outbreak of violence between Buddhist ethnic Rakhine and Rohingya Muslims in the troubled state.
