Manchester Shooting: Two Policewomen Shot, one Killed

A female police officer has died after being injured during the arrest of wanted man Dale Cregan, in Manchester, and another officer has been seriously injured.

Cregan, 29, was being sought in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son.

The officers, both female and unarmed, were injured as they attending what police have called a "routine incident" at Abbey Gardens in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, just before 11am.

Shortly after the policewomen were shot, Cregan walked into a police station and gave himeself up. He has now been arrested on suspicion of murdering a police officer - as well as the original two counts.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "The two female police officers, who were unarmed, suffered serious injuries and one officer tragically died at the scene.

"Medical teams were quickly on the scene to provide treatment and armed response vehicles have secured the area.
