Julian Assange's celebrity backers set to lose $540,000 bail money as he remains holed up in Ecuador Embassy

Julian Assange’s high profile backers, including socialite Jemima Khan, look set to lose £340,000 they posted for his bail as he remains holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy, it was revealed today.

The Wikileaks founder breached his bail conditions by seeking political asylum before he was due to be extradited to Sweden to face sexual assault charges.

They all pledged the money as sureties when Assange was bailed in December 2010 meaning they would only have to hand over the cash if he failed to surrender.

Meanwhile, another handful of celebrities including socialite Jemima Khan, journalist John Pilger, film director Ken Loach, publisher Felix Dennis have already lost the £200,000 they stumped up between them to help free him before he was bailed.

They lost this money at a hearing in July when a judge ordered it to be forfeited. Read More
