Jaws scare as swimming BANNED off Cape Cod after sighting of 16ft great white shark

A concerning number of great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod has prompted officials to keep swimmers out of the water - just ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

The first great white shark of the Cape Cod summer season was photographed over the weekend, just 50 yards from the coast off Chatham.

Several others have followed, enough for town officials to issue an advisory outlawing swimming.

In a tweet on Sunday, the Cape Cod Chronicle said: 'Chatham issues advisory after numerous shark sightings, banning swimming within 300 feet of seals along eastern coast.'

The announcement came after the sharks, one as large as 16-feet, and more than 2,000 pounds, was spotted hunting seals near the shore by the Cape Cod Shark Hunters. Read More
