Hassan Malik jailed for 20 Years for the Murder of Betty Williams

A man who admitted hitting a woman with a frying pan and strangling her before stuffing her body in a suitcase and abandoning it on the street has been jailed for 20 years.

Hassan Malik, 57, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Betty Williams, 28, whose body was found in the suitcase left among trash on a sidewalk in New York City, U.S., three days before Christmas in 2010.

Malik, from East Harlem, who was on probation due to an unrelated attempted robbery case at the time of the killing, apologised to the victim's family as he was sentenced in Manhattan's State Supreme Court.

The woman had been staying with Mr Malik in his apartment on Pleasant Avenue when she was killed, according to a report in the New York Times.

In a confession to police Malik said a fight over money broke out between the pair on December 21 2010, and admitting hitting his victim with a cast iron frying pan. Read More
