US marines return after SE Asia joint training

Two hundred US marines are back in Darwin after a tour of South-East Asia to train with the Malaysian, Thai and Indonesian military.

Members of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, took part in maritime exercises, and jungle survival and martial arts training.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has welcomed the prospect of US and Australian forces training with Indonesia and the wider region, including China.

The marines have been posted to Darwin for six months to train with the Australian Defence Force in a deal announced by US president Barack Obama when he toured the Top End in November.

A bilateral agreement will see about 2,500 US marines being rotated through the Top End by 2017. Read More
