UN Appeals For Restraint After Jet Shot Down


The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on Turkey and Syria to exercise restraint after a Turkish military plane was shot down by Syrian forces.

Damascus said it took the action because the aircraft had violated its airspace but Ankara threatened retaliatory action as it searched for its two missing pilots.

However, both sides signalled they do not want to escalate the situation, as Mr Ban urged the two countries to use diplomatic channels to handle the aftermath of Friday's incident.

Syria has admitted opening fire on the F-4 Phantom jet over the Mediterranean, raising tensions between the neighbours. Read More
