Lance Corporal Andrew Jones Death was "a cowardly act of murder" at the Hands of Afghan Soldier

The killing of an Australian soldier by an Afghan soldier last year has been described as "a cowardly act of murder" by the defence force.

Lance Corporal Andrew Jones was shot dead at a patrol base in May 2011.

"He was murdered by a rogue member of the ANA (Afghan National Army)," defence force vice-chief Air Marshal Mark Binskin told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

He was announcing the defence force had completed official inquiries into the deaths of three Australian soldiers in separate incidents in Afghanistan last year.

The other two soldiers were Sergeant Brett Wood, 32, who was killed by a roadside bomb in May and Sergeant Todd Langley, 35, who died from a gun shot wound to the head during a battle in southern Afghanistan in July.

Air Marshal Binskin, in outlining the details of the death of Lance Corporal Jones, said he wanted to speak frankly: "His killing was a cowardly act of murder." Read More
