Australia: Western Power battles storm damage

UPDATE 10am: Western Power has warned households may be without power for up to a week as the utility battles the biggest outage in its history after a once-in-a-decade storm.

As another storm front crossed the coast this morning, about 110,000 homes remained without power across the metropolitan area and the South West.

Western Power spokeswoman Miriam Borthwick said crews were tackling more than 1500 cases of damage.

“It’s realistic that there may be many homes that are off for days,” she said.

More bad weather is playing havoc as crews from Western Power and the SES try to repair damage from yesterday.

The Weather Bureau has forecast a squally thunderstorm for Perth and the South West today. A gale warning has been issued for residents between Jurien Bay and Cape Leeuwin. Another "very strong cold front" is expected to hit the same area late tomorrow or early Wednesday morning. Read More
