MoD spending on consultants rises 45-fold in just five years as bill reaches £270m

Spending on consultants by the cash-strapped Ministry of Defence has soared from £6million to £270million in only five years, a report reveals today.

The spending marks a 45-fold rise over the period. And the huge sum could get even bigger as the MoD axes 54,000 jobs in an attempt to get back into the black, warns a Parliamentary watchdog.

The Commons Public Accounts Committee says the cuts are happening so quickly that the department is at risk of losing people with important military skills.

In a blistering conclusion, the report says: 'It is important for the MoD to have a clear understanding of how many of its previous staff have been re-employed as consultants who end up working for the department again and the extra cost involved, as this could represent dreadful value for the taxpayer.'
