Gemma Gaye Killeen murdered baby for 'perfect relationship'

Tragic details of how a young Perth mother murdered her toddler son and claimed he was abducted in a bid to resurrect her on-off relationship with his father have been aired in the Supreme Court.

The heart-wrenching description of how Gemma Gaye Killeen had spent an “entirely normal” day with 22-month-old Te Reringa Kayden Ashley Wetere before placing him near the rocky water line of Hillarys Boat Harbour on November 25, 2010 came during sentencing submissions for the 23-year-old.

She faces life in jail after pleading guilty to the murder of her son.

Killeen's distressed claims that her son was missing at the harbour carpark had sparked a public search that ended when a married couple saw what they thought was a doll floating face-first in the water.

Prosecutor Linda Keane today said Killeen had carried out a premeditated “drama” that she had hoped would gain the attention of the child’s father – with whom she had an on-off relationship – or punish him.
