Just 27 police officers tracking down paedophiles in London… while 150 are working on phone-hacking investigation

There are just 27 police officers tracking down paedophiles in London - while 150 officers work on the phone-hacking investigation, the Leveson Inquiry heard today.

Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in London, told the media standards hearing he had been concerned about the £40million being spent on looking into hacking.

He said that Scotland Yard was struggling with a backlog of 400 rape cases in 2009 and he had been unhappy with their response to gang crime a year later.

Mr Malthouse questioned top Met officers about resources being put into the operation and earlier this month Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick said he had spoken to her three times about the issue.

Today, Mr Malthouse said it was his job to ask questions about how money was spent and which types of crime detectives should focus on. Read More
