Saif al Adel - also known as Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi and Ibrahim Madani Held In Egypt 'Denies Al Qaeda Link'

A man arrested at Cairo airport on suspicion of being al Qaeda's caretaker chief has reportedly denied he is the alleged terrorist.

Senior militant Saif al Adel - also known as Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi and Ibrahim Madani - on the FBI's most wanted list with up to $5m (£3.14m) reward for his capture.

Earlier reports said he arrived in Egypt on an Emirates flight from Pakistan, which had stopped over in Dubai.

However, the man who was arrested claims he is not the senior al Qaeda operative - and is the victim of mistaken identity.

Airport officials were quoted as saying the man's full name, Mohammed Ibrahim Makkawi, and date of birth matched those of the wanted suspect.

The FBI says Adel has been indicted for alleged involvement in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Following Bin Laden's death last May, Adel was reported to have taken over the terrorist group ahead of Bin Laden's longtime deputy, Mohammed al Zawahiri.
