Wave sweeps man to his death near Waihi Beach, New Zealand

Three friends of an Auckland man could only stand by and watch in horror as a freak wave pulled him out to sea while they were fishing on rocks near Waihi Beach last night.

Waihi police Sergeant Dave Litton said the four men were fishing off rocks at the north end of Waihi Beach, adjacent to Homunga Bay, in large swell when a 30-year-old man was hit by a wave and dragged out to sea just before 7pm.

"He was in the water for some time and wasn't really dressed for swimming. He had boots on and a hoodie so he struggled to swim and at some point a wave took him under."

The man's friends had to negotiate the rocks and find a vantage point for cellphone coverage. Waihi Surf Lifesaving Club members went to the scene.

He was found floating about 200m from land in Homunga Bay. Read More
