The man, identified by staff as Ronald Davis, 50, allegedly opened fired with a shotgun and specifically targeted the workers at a lumberyard in North Carolina at around 6am.
Police arrived at McBride Lumber Company in Montgomery County to find four men had been shot - three were dead and the fourth was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
The suspect fled the scene but was identified by co-workers at the firm which allowed deputies to track him back to his house, WFMY-TV reported.
