Is it me, or has 2012 started off with a bang, or should i say tremble? Earthquakes all around, many in oarts of the world not used to getting them

Well christchurch in nz is getting them non stop actually and japan had another one..so.yes these countries have had enuf Amy..and its very sad and they have had enuf.I have family in christchurch and they have.had enuf and i really feel for them.:-( and on new years day.is like..u have to be kidding..no more..leave them alone..:-(
Yeah they starting off with a bang alright.. Even usa are getting more frequent earthquakes too plus with Japan yesterday and christchurch again this morning 5 45am a 5.5 15km deep .. I need to find out more and see if any damage .. But it looks like to me a ping pong effect over the world .. Funny I could feel an earthquake again last night before I went to bed and christchurch again .. I wonder what Nick and Barb would say on this .. Deano nz

Just had a look on the USGS website and it lists 9 quakes of +5M for today....which is more +5M quakes than on any of the previous 7 days. Although there were 7 on the 30th and only 2 on the 31st.
For the past 7 days, here's the number of +5M quakes for each day:
3, 6, 4, 3, 7, 2, 9
With those kinda figures it's nigh on impossible to suggest a link with a certain day as it looks pretty random to me. Would be interesting to see if previous weeks follow a similar trend in terms of overall numbers?
Nearly all of those 34 earthquakes have occurred in areas on major fault zones which see regular activity (Indonesia, Japan, NZ, Antarctic Ridge, South America etc). The only one that stands out imo, is the Siberia one.
The 4M quake in Oklahoma is interesting too..although some people are suggesting a mining link. That could be the case. I wonder if there has been any mining in and around the area where the Siberian ones are happening?

Nick Nick Nick ... Happy new year to you man!! Ok - This is what I think .. When you look at Stats and figures on these earthquakes .. Your looking historically, which means that you are going to come up with answers like yours.. I think you have to look at it from a different way, a different point of view .. How can you tell me That Christchurch has no meaning to what is happening there and then other such places, that are now getting these earthquakes which are unusual like Oklahoma etc etc .. Even Japan and the likes.. This to me stands out allot and gives me indications of something actually happening around this globe...? It could be a great coincidence too, but fella come on man... Christchurch speaks volumes its self .. Are you an accountant or mathematician because - if yo go back to records and not instinct or heart - You are going to get the same results, but if you open your human conscious and third eye, surely u must be able to see - that their is something not quite right happening right now, whatever it is...! Ok lets see if there is another big event in the next coming week or two.. And then take it from there .. Im pretty sure their will be - not that im not making a prediction on this site - Last time and first time I did that I was wrong and Im normally good at it in other way.. I think disasters are going to speed up now, I expect earthquakes to either cause tsunami's or nuclear power plants to stuff up....takeover of Iran...more bloodshed....people won't be able to handle it, they go hysterical if they can't get the latest pair of Nikes...!!
Interestingly I read, on the internet the other day a warning, or "prediction" about Cornwall & it rang a "bell", am sure there was a Nostradamus prophecy about a major earthquake hitting Cornwall...not 100%...will look it up.

From NZ. Christchurch sits right on the lips of two massive volcanos that last erupted around 6MYA. Whether those volcanos that comprise the Banks Peninsula were created near the Kermadec/Hikurangi trench and then drifted to their current positions or erupted near where they currently are sited is something I'm not too certain of.
What I am nearing certainty on is that there may eventually be another Volcanic eruption off the Christchurch coast given these quakes follow typical patterns preceding other volcanic eruptions. Others have 'poo pooed' that idea by saying never happened before, highly unlikely it's volcanic etc etc.
So why then, are the satellite Geothermal images of the Christchurch region censored with none available from September 2010 - yet are available for other regions of NZ? Conspiratorial - or suspect?
Our GNS scientists are downplaying the possibility of a Tsunami - yet they are the same scientists who came out in October and proclaimed all was well and good with the likelihood of a 6M quake dropping to 1 in 20,000.
I await with anticipation.
I was just reading the last blog at 12.32am from James and heard on the news - another sizable earthquake in Christchurch - Just checked geonet - nothing up yet or any news so, at this stage .. I dont anything yet - of size mag etc .. Dean nz .....?

One thing I want to ask...is there any damage from todays earthquakes in Christchurch...'cos on channel 9 news here in Aussieland, they stated "no damage"...whilst showing footage of buildings toppling and cars squished.
Maybe showing old footage???...dunno.
Can someone in NZ confirm there is no damage/injuries like they are reporting on Aussie news???

Barb, when I looked at the footage today of the NZ earthquake I thought it looked like old footage.
2012 looks like continuing where 2011 left off, more earthquakes, mass bird deaths, more natural disasters, nations heading towards war. On the positive side some people seem to be waking up to the manipulation that surrounds us, hopefully 2012 can be a year of change : )

Its mankind that is really truly bringing negative energy to this world, in one sense or the other, scientists are adamant that the end of the world wont happen and I have to agree too but its about an awakening to what could be with all these big events happening to make the change.. I just went to an earthquake site and counted how many earthquakes for yesturday Monday 2nd, as there seemed to be more than normal...I counted 101 (and this is the site that is suddenly not listing any for NZ.)

I don't get what you're saying about Christchurch having a link with other places. I'm not considering a link purely because of the fact that NZ is situated on the ring of fire which is one of the most volatile areas on earth when it comes to earthquakes and volcanoes. Japan is in the ring of fire too. These places see many, many thousands of earthquakes each year and unfortunately, some are powerful enough to cause damage. This has ALWAYS been the case. If some people want to see a link between quakes in areas that have always seen quakes and 2012, then that is up to them....but what about all the previous devastating quakes that have occurred in those areas before? Were they just flukes?
Quakes in Oklahoma are far less common but they have still occurred. Plus when you factor in the controversial mining techniques which are being used there, that may explain the recent activity. I think more analysis and research is needed before definite links are made.
I'm looking at things subjectively, whilst many others are looking at things emotionally. I recommend others to do the same as it can't be too nice living in the fear the world is gonna end soon. It seems many people are decided on 2012 already so whenever something happens around the world, it just confirms their fears. Many people are taking TV programme diaglogue from cartoons and adverts as proof of impending doom. It's just ridiculous imo. To me it proves beyond reasonable doubt that broadcasters and advertisers will go to any lengths for the extra profit.
As for the next big event, whether it happens in the the next week or not will not change your opinion on things. Another sizeable quake or new volcano will almost certainly happen soon...just like they always have. When it does, i'm sure you'll say 'I told you so' and i'm sure i'll respond with the same comment ;)
It's honestly not a question of coincidences when earthquakes occur on fault lines, it's a matter of probability. These things have always and will continue to be bound to happen regardless of the year.
I've just been looking at NZ's significant earthquake history. From what I can make out, the longest period between fairly large earthquakes is about 20 years..but this only goes back to the mid 1800s. In between those years there is fairly regular +6M/7M and some 8M quakes. I just wonder if the residents of Hawke's Bay thought 1931 was going to be the end of the world as a result of the powerful quakes which took hundreds of lives? Many hundreds of aftershocks followed the quakes...which were quite a bit more powerful than the ones are affecting Christchurch at the moment. Since the Hawke's Bay quakes, things have quietened down in that area and I believe that things will eventually settle down (for a while at least) on the South Island too.
The world is certainly changing though...this much I agree on, but what other people fail to realise is that is has been constantly changing for millions and millions of years. NZ and all other land mass was part of that evolution...why should it suddenly stop just because it's an inconvenience to us?

IIRC, there was a mini tsunami there last year. It didn't cause much damage but it was the result of the landslip in the atlantic....so it could happen again.

Morning Barb, yes they have gone quiet since last night, there has been a 3.3 about 10km north of Seddon just over an hour ago.
Same for Pacific and Europe all calm at the moment.
It does seem to go quiet before a big one hits somewhere, lets hope this is not the case, but keeping an extra eye on the pacific today.

Geothermal images are usually available on Nasa's website
which are taken with the Landsat Satellite that shows heat imaging of active geothermal areas.
Plenty there of the rest of NZ with Taupo and the Alps showing strong heat residuals as expected, but Christchurch is cool and dark.

Ok sorry to burst into the party like this but I just wanted to say, that just because its gone quiet here in NZ and I checked .. All earthquakes in NZ were centered in east Christchurch for the last 2 to 3 days, worrying yes!! But significantly there was one elsewhere in NZ .. Phew .. What Im saying or think is, this, that we are going to see the ping pong effect .. It wont be Christchurch with the big one, it will be somewhere else i.e. The kermadic islands - papua new guinea.. Chilli or Japan .. I thought this last time and it was hit some where else instead .. Dean out very stressed ) :

were the politicians commenting on the impact of the earthquakes or the earthquakes themselves? The PGA in one of the Christchurch earthquakes was high.
Earthquakes in NZ are anything but unprecedented. The stats I posted above should show that. Since 2004 there have been about 18 notable quakes in NZ. This doesn't include the hundreds of aftershocks or the many thousand quakes that are not felt or are felt but not strong enough to cause damage.
Any city built so close to converging tectonic plates is very likely to see powerful earthquakes from time to time. I'm pretty sure that the NZ earthquake commission predicted a moderate earthquake in Canterbury...this was back in 1991. NZ has very stringent building regulations which kinda proves, they do expect earthquakes.
If you look at a list of the major earthquakes through history, there is one thing that connects them and that is their location on major fault zones. Unfortunately, some people have decided these places make good areas to build cities and residential areas.

There's supposed to be a media conference on Friday regarding NZ earthquakes..."seismologists meeting under urgency this week"..."in reality they are dumbfounded by the sequences unfolding"...few days ago the authorities described the situation as "unprecedented"...and "experts had stated these earthquakes would go on for years not days"
I presume this media conference will conclude what the situation is and give advice to the people of Chrustchurch...

Some geological scientists in New Zealand openly discredit the idea that there could ever be a volcanic eruption in Christchurch. I've commented on various other sites in NZ about this. The main pool of knowledge seems to extend as far as "Taupos obviously active as there's a known magma duct there." To my mind, the notion of a small pool of magma in its own chamber dumbfounds many.
The reality is, we haven't seen any volcanos go off in NZ in 800 years, and we simply don't know the full extent of their characteristics until the event actually happens. Who's to say that Auckland isn't just one big caldera with a few hills?
barb.. the three earthquakes happened in Auckland a year ago around this time. A subsequent rockfall a day or two later after winds killed one person.
All I know about Christchurch and surrounds is that people should just move North. That's an instinctual feeling, much like I imagine some people in the North feel the pull to go South.

I wasn't questioning whether the media conference would be happening. Just the comments about seismologists being dumbfounded about the earthquakes. That appears to be a comment made by someone who runs an astrology blog and not a seismologist.
The comment I made about there being less than a year to live was a tongue in cheek response to scientists saying the quakes will continue for many years. It was with reference to some people thinking the world will end on December 21st :)

I think it's extremely naive and possibly irresponsible for geological scientists to rule out the possibility of future eruptions anywhere in NZ. Considering NZ's geological history and number of volcanoes, it stands to reason that some of them will erupt at some time in the future. Isn't the Banks peninsula volcanic? Regardless of that, there's enough large volcanoes on the North Island which are more than capable of affecting the South Island.
You made an interesting point about Auckland. I know there's no link to Auckland but i've often wondered whether the 'circular' shape at the southern end of the North Island could be part of a caldera. If one exists there, it would be massive.

Hi All and your welcome Nick,
In fact 4 new Volcanoes were discovered under Auckland November 2011 which brought the Auckland Volcanic Field to 55.
The most prominent of the 4 new Volcanoes has a 300m Diameter Crater surrounded by a semicircle of volcanic ash in Boggust Park in Favona, Mangere.
They reckon it is also one of the older volcanoes in Auckland (even though just discovered)
They went unnoticed before because of the lack of major landform features, unlike the other volcanoes in Auckland.
New Zealand has had Eruptions in the past including eruptions from the Super Volcano Lake Taupo and no doubt will again in the future.
Christchurch had another 4.8mag 15km deep yesterday morning being thursday morning - today is friday morning here in NZ - apparently top geo scientist will be reviewing the whole situation there and having questions and answers for everyonebe residents - they have had 9500 quakes since the september 2010 big earthquake mag 7.1 - I wonder what they are going to say....!? I think it is being reviewed because experts the other day said that these earthquakes aren't going to go on for days, more like YEARS.

But the be all and end of it is - A mag 7 could trigger a tsunami - a probability of that is low and a 50/50 for a mag 6 again - but 5,4,3's will go on for days and years ... The situation for the Christchurch residents is very serious, and long term...going by the experts opinions.
Deano here another 4.8 in Christchurch - thats four decent earthquakes in NZ three of them out of the four were the biggest ones in Christchurch ... Have to say .. I noticed a few quakes recorded in Idaho over the past few days which I haven't noticed before but on further checking, it appears that it's a very active area.
I'm still not jumping to conclusions about the end of the world, impending doom or change. As far as i'm concerned earthquakes have always happened and will continue to do so. I know i'm unlikely to change anyone's opinion on this site...the 'prepare for change' countdown timer on the left of the page probably confirms that.
I'm open minded enough to be able to change my opinion in the future but at the moment i'm not convinced. Most of the things happening around the world have happened before...that doesn't mean i'm saying that they're 'normal' and everything is ok as weather extremes, for example are making life difficult for many.
The Arab spring and Occupy movements are very much against the grain though. The Iran/US stand off is delicate but I hope for the most part it is just posturing and rhetoric which is nothing new between countries jostling for dominance...particularly in the ME. That said, I don't think we're too far away from air strikes...probably from Israel with the backing and support of the US. There's much to lose from all countries involved so we'll see.
Lynsey posted an interesting article earlier about the Great Storm of 1703. There's some interesting parallels between how people reacted way back then to national disasters and how some react now. Human nature I suppose.

In the grand scheme of the Earth, there is no such thing as "uncommon" because disasters will eventually reach every part of the planet, and will rinse and repeat.
In Christchurch's case though, recent activity is not common or normal versus to what we would expect to see happen there. In fact, the last "major" quake of any sort in NZ was in 1968, over 40 years ago. Before that, in 1931. In both of those two, neither were near Christchurch.
Christchurch has now seen two relatively major quakes in the span of a few months, and continues to be rumbled by medium-sized quakes. This is not normal for that area, at least within our observational window.
Another 5.2 Christchurch ! Always around the same depth as well which is roughly between 5 to 15km deep - I think this was 10km... And was at 1.21am - im counting 5 significant sizeable earthquakes in NZ and 4 in Christchurch over the last day or so... Can you imagine to be a resident of Christchurch.. Like Barb said you cant sell your house and I dont think anyone is going to buy either... Something really weird is happening there... Again it could all just go away like that too .. But we and the scientist know its not .. And maybe a good time to evacuate too - just saying.. And then their is America too now which is getting allot of 4 mags on a daily basis recently.. Now is it really man made or is that a cover up too for what is maybe really happening that is on the end of our tongues .... !?
I can't actually alter messages once posted (outside my own), so I would just like to fulfill Dean's request to let everyone know that the message right above mine (this one) is, well, by Dean, lol. He also left it on the Alert as well if anyone needs a bonafide verification.
The Canterbury Region did have several earthquakes around 100 years ago but they were further north than where they are now. One around 1906? caused the spire of the Christchurch Cathedral to fall, another in 1880's did the same thing.
So as a whole, not unusual in Canterbury.
What is unusual is the current quake sequence. NZ's location on the crust means that the mantle hereabouts is pretty darn thin. For the quakes to be increasing in frequency and getting shallower and shallower does follow a typical pre eruption sequence.
GNS yesterday commented that they now have "no idea" when the quakes will stop as its "very unusual and unprecedented in NZ" - possibly the wrong thing to say "very unusual and unprecedented in modern times" would have been better. Local Maori in Auckland still have oral history of how there were several strong earthquakes for a sustained period prior to Rangitotos eruption around 1400AD - and that went without warning, much like Tarawera in 1886.
Whos to say that NZ doesn't have a slightly different signature of pre volcanic eruptions as it seems to me that each volcano around the world has different characteristics unique to it preceding an eruption.
Christchurch is as they say, "munted" with large areas of the city having dropped to 30cms above Avon River peak levels. It wont take much but a storm front and a high tide to flood those areas as has already happened three or four times in the last few months.
Unfortunately, the reptiles that are in charge here won't release the full story as it will be too expensive to move people away from imminent danger zones. Better to spend money fixing things that will get broken again. 4.6BN spent so far on repairs.
I am concerned about all the Aussie news last night about up coming USA military prescence in Australia 'explained' as due to the "massive military build up in China"
...and that USA won't be using many troops, but will be using warfare technology.

Slightly off topic, a little while ago when browsing CC on my phone, it loaded a mobile version of the blog but it has since disappeared. Are there any plans on getting it back? It makes browsing so much easier and quicker. My user agent hasn't changed on my mobile but each time I request the site, it loads the full web version.

When all the information is in from the stations then they look at all the data to get their final report.
Although there were many stations which measured this earthquake at a 7 - 7.5 Magnitude, there were even more stations which measured this earthquake from a 6.6 - 6.9 Magnitude.

When you post a quake article that has conflicting magnitude data from various sources, do you calculate a mean number or do you tend to go by local station data?
Also, is there ever any differences in depth between the various stations? If so, could that be seen as a reason why the magnitudes vary?

Hi Nick, had a great weekend thanks.
When several networks show conflicting data, I will check all the stations that have sent Data through.
This can go both ways, in the past I have posted higher than what USGS has stated, Other times I have posted the Magnitude lower than USGS has stated depending on the stations Data.
When Data comes in it shows distances to the Epicenter of the earthquake in question.
For example the 6.6 Magnitude in Santa Cruz this Morning, the station closest to the epicenter measured this earthquake at a 7.5 Magnitude, however the following 9 stations measured this earthquake 6.0 - 6.9 Magnitude.
Data may come in from 10 stations or a 100 stations depending on location and size of the earthquake.
EMSC initially reported this as a 6.1 Magnitude earthquake, but after checking the stations I went with the same Report as USGS which was 6.6 Magnitude.
I will only report a earthquake different to the networks if the stations data does not match their final report. Hence you will see additional comments to why under the Earthquake details.
Being linked up to over 3500 stations around the world would take weeks to decipher each and every quake, so tend to monitor the larger ones when I see a discrepancy.
EMSC later upgraded this earthquake to a 6.6 Magnitude

The Israeli lobby has no more power than the Latino / Black / Corporate or a multitude of other interest groups that play tug of war on Congress, the Senate and the White House. It's just another group to woo come election time. When it's not election time, the US routinely cuts off arms shipments and dictates orders to Israel. George Bush II, and now Obama, are both examples of Israel getting the backhand when the US interests are not put first and foremost.
The only reason it seems that way to many is from a misunderstanding of North American politics, Mideast politics, or thinly-veiled racist beliefs, which I certainly hope isn't the case. No, "the Jews" aren't responsible for everything wrong in the world. Israel is merely an American platform into the Mideast at which to toss money in order to extend influence, and has been ever since oil entered into the geopolitical equation.
To think that a tiny nation with no resources, 14 million people and who is routinely kept on a short leash by the US controls the world's sole superpower is silly, at best. There's a reason why thousands of US troops and assorted navy vessels are heading to Israel, and not the other way around, and why America has to keep Israel afloat with billions of dollars in loans, grants, donations and military equipment.
I agree with Nick, Barb, that there is no mention of the anti-christ in Nostradamus, having studied it myself. At least none that I could find, although I might have missed something.
However, there are several verses, including the infamous one about "Mabus", that detail a large, coming battle and violent change for civilization. Of course, this assumes that Nostradamus is even giving the right information. The way things are currently going, though, suggest that he might just be right after all.

Fair play to them but i'm firmly sceptical about his 'predictions'. I think James Randi summed up Michel de Notredame and many of his supporters perfectly. As I have said before, it seems the power of his predictions are always in the interpretations of his quatrains and in some cases, the translations have been changed in order to fit the interpretations.

For all those who want to hear the strange sounds, they can be found in the unexplained and wierd category. It's indeed for real, since I can verify at least two Canadian cities that have been severely plagued by these sounds and strange hums to the point where people's health have been affected; it has even begun featuring in the mainstream news here. As to what is causing these sounds, however, I remain uncertain.
Matt...just listened to the "noise" video 2012..only watched the first few minutes as too hot in this bedroom (rather be here in Australia than freezing cold Pommy land!)...well, the noise at the beginning reminds me of the movie "War Of the Worlds" starring Tom Cruise (LOVE that movie!!!...have you seen it???)...
Secondly...the noise in my left ear (that Nick told me to see a doctor about!!!)...but which seems to happen when there are earthquakes...well, the SAME noise is in that video...is that spooky or what???

Some of the noise videos are no doubt hoaxes, BUT the occurrence of the "noise" is around the globe and although some have suggested it's some kind of advertising gimmick for a new movie coming out, I just can't buy into that theory. There are too many independent sources reporting the same phenomena. Do I believe it is a "sign" from God? I don't know, but I'd want to rule out the scientific theories first.
But there are WAY too many "signs" going on already:

Plagues
Birds/fish deaths
US & co taking over countries

Barb, I hear what you are saying, but is it not true that we have experienced all of those things you've just mentioned before? One could argue that "yes" we have and at what appeared to be in the same time period. Personally, I believe God is overdue. He should have blown the whistle for us to "get out of the pool" a long time ago....

It really isn't unprecedented for most of those things to happen. Some tend to result from the others in a knock-on effect.
Also, you mentioned the Melbourne hail in summer as a sign of something happening. Hail tends to happen in summer. The conditions during thunderstorms during summer are perfect for the formation of hail.
Another important point to remember is in this day and age, thanks to sites like the ComingCrisis, it's far easier to find out about many events that are generally not covered by mainstream news. So it stands to reason that many instances of animal deaths, fish kills, weird weather etc were either not reported or generally available to the masses before. Unless something like a natural disaster is deemed newsworthy, it doesn't get air time.
As for the noises video...well I find it hard to take YouTube videos as definite proof of something happening. Every time I see one which purports to be a strange event or UFO sighting, i'm reminded of the many hoax videos about Elenin and YU55 (amongst others) that claimed to be 'real' and 'fact' but turned out to be attempts to scare people. I'm a seeing is believing person so unless there is overwhelming, compelling, unbias evidence to support theories and claims, I tend to just take it on board and wait for something a little more concrete to surface. It's just far to easy for people to edit and manipulate videos and pictures....it's possible to create hoax videos and pictures with freeware and you don't need to be a graphics designer to do it.

It always seems to be filmed by one person.. There is always no one else around - (apart from three guys in a forest working looking stoned) - to talk about it happening.. right there and then.. like in a an emphatic state of awareness ..?
U would have thought that - people would have come out of their homes.. to see what is going on.. but no, no one else seems to give a damn..?
Also the birds carry on like normal.. I would have thought that dogs would start barking too and generally the animals start acting strange.. But everything seems to be normal like nothing is happening ?
The noises (sky-quakes) seem to match all the time and does actually sound very realistic too for a video off a phone .. but its just way to erie that no one else seems to come out wondering what that noise is and the animals carry on normal .. Hi Dean, Throughout History there have been occurrences that have been recorded by scientists and heard by thousands over periods of years.
No doubt there have been hoaxes like anything else, however some have never been explained.
On Nov 15th 2006 Dr Tom Moir from the Massey University in Auckland made recordings of the Auckland Hum and actually published it on the university website, the density peaks at 56 Hertz.
There are same famous cases that can be looked up, during the late 70's headlines appeared in the United Kingdom which they called the Bristol Hum.
During the 90's the sounds started to be reported in North America and was studied at great lengths by the University of New Mexico as many complaints were coming in from residence regarding humming sounds near the town of Taos, New Mexico.
One of the latest cases which appeared in the press was just last year on the 9th of June 2011, when residents from Woodland a village in England were experiencing a hum that had already lasted 2 months.
During 2010 reports were coming in from Windsor and Essex County in Ontario, Canada.
These are cases that have all been researched by experts and widely reported on and heard by thousands of people,.... not just some bloke with a camera on youtube

i've only seen a couple of the noises videos and I think that in most cases it's really hard to accept audio over a video as proof of something happening...especially as you cannot see it. You made an interesting point about there being a lack of reaction in people on some of the videos you watched and I think that's a valid point. You would expect people to be in various states of excitement, panic or other emotions.
Perhaps some are genuine though. As to the cause...i'm not so sure. Perhaps military testing of some sort?
A strange noise was reported recently in the North East of the UK. After lots of theories about its origin, the RAF and BGS confirmed it was caused by a Tornado GR4 on a supersonic exercise. Witnesses did report two RAF aircraft in the area at the time so it does seem plausible...although, many forums are disputing it and calling it a skyquake. I don't have much of an opinion on the explantion as I don't live near the area so didn't see or hear anything but it does seem reasonable imo.

I've been spending a wee bit of time looking up at the heavens when the skies aren't full of clouds (more usual than not as of recent times) and have noticed that the constellations and stars in this spiral arm of the milky way seem to be banding together much closer rather than being spread out between east and west as they usually are. The eastern and western skies are starting to look decidedly empty as of late, with the exception of reliable Venus still in her same spot.
Down here in NZ, Orion used to be in the NE, and Southern Cross used to be more SW. Now - both constellations are almost in line with each other.
Looking from North West to South East, the band of stars is starting to look like a giant belt, which may or may not have anything to do with the coming alignment (which would theoretically make sense that it's all a belt)
Can anyone in the northern hemisphere confirm the same phenomenon is starting to happen up there, and that there is a bigger patch of darkness either side of the milky way?
As for New Zealand - Taupo has been getting quite a few shallow mild quakes over the past week. 6 quakes under mag 3, so probably nothing to get excited about but certainly something to keep watching.

I like looking at the stars too and can't say that I have noticed what you mentioned. I'm not an expert though...I don't even have a telescope but I do have a keen interest in the night sky and I use a few apps on my phone and computer that help me learn more. Are you bearing in mind the rotation on the axis and around the sun with you thoughts on the positions of the stars? Also it may be an idea posting the question on an astronomy forum as the people using them are extremely knowledgeable.
I'm going to a stargazing event next month and i'll ask some of the experts there as well.

You made some interesting points in your last but one comment.
However, I don't think the occupy movements will change how the wealth is distributed. Lets face facts here, most countries are going through some incredibly tough times at the moment. As a result welfare, education, health and other public spending is being cut which in turn creates more strife for the people that really need the help. There may well be calls for the rich to pay more tax but will it really make a difference to the 1%? I don't think so as the vast amount of wealth and assets that they already have will mean they will be ok and their lavish lifestyles and fine dining will continue as long as they live. Put it this way, if something terrible and drastic were to happen whether it be a natural disaster, epidemic, world war etc...who would be best placed to survive it? The average person with little or no resources? Or someone who is extremely rich and may be privy to such events that may happen as well as having the ways and means to prepare for such events in order to survive them?
Sharing out the wealth is fine in theory but impossible in reality due to greed and corruption. Although, imho, the world banking system is one thing that needs to be changed and if done correctly, it could ease a lot of the issues faced in many countries. We'd still be left with blood thirsty people in charge intent on controlling the world's oil reserves and markets.
I don't believe we're heading for worldwide anarchy but the various protests around the world are likely to result in new Governments being formed. Some will switch from the right to the left and vice versa, some will be centrists and others will use fundamentalist doctrines. Will that spark a major change in things? I'm not so sure but time will tell.

All comment that have come in today so far have been reviewed and posted, ages ago, in fact. At our quickest, comments are reviewed within seconds, and rarely within an hour or so if things are busy.
They keep advertising on tv and the radio this program, "The Biggest Loser - Singles" (I think there was a program about "couples"...so I guess this is about "singles").
They show that the program is about really fat people being verbally abused and forced to do excercise etc to lose weight....and they get really verbally abused if they don't do as they are told.
Wonder...what those "above" think of this....our "gods" or "aliens" or "Creator"???
Or what people in Somalia /Etheopia...starving...think of this???

We get a billion spam comments a day, and it's just easier to moderate comments for the time being versus a live chat stream. I can't adjust your comment, but don't worry, Lynsey will leave at least one of your limbs so that you can still surf the CC!
