A magnitude 7.3 earthquake has struck off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra at a depth of 29.1 km (18.1 miles), the quake hit at 18:37:01 UTC Tuesday 10th January 2012The epicenter was 423 km (262 miles) Southwest of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 1837Z 10 JAN 2012 COORDINATES - 2.3 NORTH 93.1 EAST LOCATION - OFF W COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA MAGNITUDE - 7.3 EVALUATION A DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT DOES NOT EXIST BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA. HOWEVER - THERE IS A VERY SMALL POSSIBILITY OF A LOCAL TSUNAMI THAT COULD AFFECT COASTS LOCATED USUALLY NO MORE THAN A HUNDRED KILOMETERS FROM THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY.
